Forums - Gaming - Retro game recommendation thread

I am currently replaying Castlevania: Circle of the Moon on the GBA and enjoying it a lot.

Demon's Crest (SNES, 1994)

Tough as nails but an artfully constructed, atmospheric, and deep action-adventure, one of the hidden gems of the 4th generation.

Actraiser (snes)

Best retro game. Sound/graphics, hack n slash, and town building. An epic experience.

What's your choices when designing a race?

Spoiler!

Mine's Large, rich dictatorship subterrean, creative, defense -20, ground combat -20, espionage -10

Creative will over time eliminate the weaknesses, which are already partially covered by being a subterran race (ground defense) and a dictatorship (espionage defense).

A large and rich homeworld makes it very useful in combination with subterran, as it will grow to become a massive, self-sustaining production world even when under siege. Subterran as a whole with it's doubling of the population makes that you get double the amount of workers/researchers/farmers before bonuses and consequent income to buy production makes them the fastest-growing production power in the endgame with whom even unification builds can't compete with anymore.

This thread sent me on a research binge for Saturn games. Graphically a lot of Saturn games have aged a hell of a lot better than N64 and PS1 games. Even some of the 3D stuff like Panzer Dragoon II and Panzer Dragoon Saga blew me away.

Also I made a Pseudo-Wishlist for Saturn games on pricecharting. I'm not going to buy all of these, but rather load them up on a multicart on an OG Saturn system. The games are listed as either NA Saturn or JP Saturn games. Take a look. https://www.pricecharting.com/wishlist?user=z7k4dvglkmyknuh74nsmqtjoeq

Theres more than price charting can handle, some missing from price charting

There's a feature to add missing games. I think you just need a pic of the front cover art. List away, and I can add them to pricecharting.

Contra on the SNES

Rendering Ranger R2; a technical powerhouse and actually fun to play to boot.

Pop'n Twinbee is a seriously overlooked SNES gem in my opinion; with lovely pixel art, an awesome soundtrack, and gameplay that can be adjust from quite forgiving to very challenging, it's my favourite shmup on the system. No idea why nobody seems to talk about it.

I have not posted those as I like to post more obscure stuff first with GH being an exception. But yes Panzer Dragoon Saga/Azel is one of the best RPGs ever made. The only great RPG with Dragoon in the name I know of.

BraLoD feels a sudden pain in his back, he's been backstabbed by the silent assassin Leynos, but wait a minute what's this! it was Dart roleplaying BraLoD so now Dart's life depends on a favourable D20 dice roll. So will this be the end or will BraLoD make a surprise entrance to try to save Dart, and why were they role playing each other, did they expect an attack or was it just dumb luck? (question answered by reader email) You silly narrator look at who was saved of course it was dumb luck, find out more by staying tuned for the next thrilling installment of Dragoon V Dragoon.
