I’m making one of these comparisons, not sure if it’s been done before

Physical top 30 only! (Famitsu)

W# Top 10 —— Top 30 —— NSW%
W1: 691,335 — 969,536 — 99.2%
W2: 316,577 — 442,947 —99.0%
W3: 283,521 — 374,114 — 98.4%

Total 2021: 1,786,597

Total NSW: 1,769,448
Total PS: 17,149

So Switch is selling roughly 100 times more physical software than the PS4 and PS5 combined.

I am sure outside of the TOP 30 we have some more titles from other platforms, so the percentage might drop a bit. But 30-50 times seems likely.

3DS-FC: 4511-1768-7903 (Mii-Name: Mnementh), Nintendo-Network-ID: Mnementh, Switch: SW-7706-3819-9381 (Mnementh)

my greatest games: 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023

10 years greatest game event!

bets: [peak year] [+], [1], [2], [3], [4]

This past week the cutoff for the top 30 was ~2,500 units. There would have to be an insane amount of leggy PS games to get a ratio between 30:1 and 50:1 like you are suggesting.

Look at this, and all hardware sales. If I have a Japanese third-party studio, for the obvious reason my game go Ps5 only.

Ps5/Ps4 if I look to overseas.

(This a mental gymnastics and this habitual trend, yet)

Not sure if anyone caught this but...

5. [NSW] Super Smash Bros. Ultimate – 17,099 / 4,109,327
10. [NSW] Pokemon Sword/Shield – 9,882 / 3,929,246 + 15. [NSW] Pokemon Sword/Shield + Expansion Pass – 6,302 / 188,086 = 4,117,332

So Pokemon sword and shield is now the second highest selling switch game in Japan?

Yes. But we should know this number doesn't contain download sales at all.

If you need something about Japanese market from the perspective of Japanese, please contact me.

For reference this is what the software chart looked like a year ago.  Oh what a difference a year can make.

As it stands currently 2021 Switch is outpacing 2007 DS (which means peak DS, best Q1 ever) but its very doubtful that will continue until end of Q1

The only way, new model plus AAA 2D Mario, Zelda Botw 2, and a Switch Sports game, in the same year.

Those are actually precisely the things I'm hoping for this year. Botw2 is obviously this year. A new 2D Mario game should be coming sometime in the near future as it is a MAJOR IP and Switch has yet to get one other than a port just throw out to temporarily appease people, so hopefully that'll this year. Switch Sports, even just a port of Wii Sports Club from Wii U, makes a ton of sense and is an easy pickup of millions (perhaps even 10+ million) in software sales.

Week 3 top selling hardware (Famitsu - maybe data are not that precise for handhelds until 2000):

1997: PS1 - 93.555 (LTD: 4.759.361)
1998: PS1 - 113.077 (9.846.939)
1999: PS1 - 72.493 (14.016.722)
2000: GBC - 49.516 (3.221.483)
2001: PS2 - 23.966 (3.232.624)
2002: PS2 - 91.718 (6.867.542)
2003: PS2 - 68.252 (10.430.391)
2004: GBA - 51.977 (11.584.167)
2005: PSP - 57.383 (630.480)
2006: NDS - 64.515 (5.857.127)
2007: NDS - 127.770 (14.567.730)
2008: NDS - 88.575 (21.625.563)
2009: NDS - 81.334 (25.533.278)
2010: PSP - 52.122 (13.822.746)
2011: PSP - 31.551 (16.438.818)
2012: 3DS - 80.960 (4.704.569)
2013: 3DS - 81.855 (10.235.654)
2014: 3DS - 47.438 (14.948.066)
2015: 3DS - 44.229 (18.096.641)
2016: 3DS - 39.677 (20.331.655)
2017: PS4 - 36.413 (4.187.494)
2018: PS4 - 44.910 (6.045.922)
2019: NSW - 71.672 (7.270.052)
2020: NSW - 96.458 (11.881.017)
2021: NSW - 170.691 (17.990.782)

Only NDS came close to this year's Switch result (127.770 units in 2007).

Unusual 3rd week

Sakuna on Switch not only outselling but significantly out-legging the PS4 version now that it's had a restock.

10 third party Switch games versus 2 on PS, which comes to 83% of third party games in the top 30 being on Switch.

Sakuna is already the 9th best selling game by Marvelous in Japan and this is without even thinking about digital which would probably bring it very close to #1, no doubt I think the game will surpass 500K by the end of this year. PS4 version faced no supplies issues and it's actually the 3rd best selling game overall in the past 4 months on the system , so it should have 100K physical by the end of 2021.

Switch Q4 2020:

Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin - 84.814

Switch Q1 2021:

Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin - 32.244

It interesting that in the last months the only two games that have broken the Switch domination are COD, Cyberpunk 2077 and Sakuna, just the stark contrast between the three games. Two are made by teams of thousands and have the biggest marketing campaigns we've seen and the other one is made by two guys and Nintendo literally had to ask to get it on the Switch. In the last few years there is only a few franchises from third parties to surpass 500K, so this would be a put Marvelous on the map. Especially as I anticipate Rune Factory 5 to surpass 500K as well Olive Town to easily surpass 1 million. By the end of 2021 Marvelous will potentially have sold over 2.5M software making them a top publisher in Japan.

So Pokemon sword and shield is now the second highest selling switch game in Japan?

Both are just placeholders for when MK8 surpasses them. Only 10-20 weeks for Splatoon 2 to drop below MK8, the others will follow in the years to come.
