Forums - Sony - PS4 to PS5 transition will take 3 years, more cross-gen games coming from Sony

Well, I guess in the end, both consoles will be the same. The "we believe in generations" was just a way to take a jab at Microsoft. But in the end, money talks and money is still with PS4 and Xbox One owners who will take around 3 years to upgrade.

Sony's lack of transparency on cross generation games doesn't mean they don't "believe in generations." As it stands, Microsoft won't have any next generation exclusives until 2022, compared to Sony who has Astro's Playroom and Demon's Souls as PS5 exclusives right at launch.

We're definitely getting some Xbox Series only games in 2021, just not as many as PS5 only games in 2021. Scorn is already announced for 2021 as Xbox Series and PC only. STALKER 2 is currently scheduled for 2021 on Xbox Series and PC only. Warhammer 40,000 Darktide is currently scheduled for 2021 on Xbox Series and PC only. Hello Neighbor 2 is currently scheduled for 2021 on Xbox Series and PC only. I personally think that Flight Simulator will hit Xbox in 2021 with the originally announced Xbox One version cancelled (considering how far below the minimum PC spec Xbox One is). Hellblade 2 seems to be Xbox Series and PC only and might make Holiday 2021, seeing as it was announced Holiday 2019, 2 years earlier, with in-engine footage ready already.

Only a few of those games you mentioned have solid release dates. Hellblade 2 releasing in 2021 is very unlikely, considering we didn't even get a trailer apart from the VGA reveal, and the fact its using UE5. I also doubt MS will cancel the Xbox One version of Flight Simulator since it already is announced and falls in line with their comments about cross generation development.

It seems Scorn & Warhammer are slated to release in 2021, so my comment was a bit off base.

A slow buy for me then.

Eh, they say that but I fully expect them to still have exclusives that are only on PS5 in that 3 year period. I don't think multi-platform games will stay on PS4 for the whole 3-year estimation either.

Well, we already know of many PS5 only exclusives even in the first year of support, God of War 5, Gran Turismo 7, Returnal, Ratchet & Clank, Deathloop, Ghostwire Tokyo, etc. But they have also announced several cross-gen exclusives for the first year, Horizon Forbidden West, Sackboy, Kena, Spider-Man Miles Morales, Guilty Gear Strive. So I guess we will see a mix of PS5 only and PS5/PS4 1st/2nd/3rd party PS exclusives from 2021-2023, with each year getting more and more PS5 only and less PS4/PS5 games.

Yeah, that's basically what I'm saying. So really, there's still plenty of reason to upgrade to the PS5 even if some games from Sony's first-party still release on PS4.

I think this will be done on a game by game basis. If the developers want to build a PS5 exclusive I would imagine that thats up to them. There is absolutely no reason for sackboy to be a PS5 exclusive. Same goes for any games that were most likely already in development for PS4.

So PS5 is effectively the PS4 Pro Pro?

Yup, lol, right along with the XB1XSS, and XB1XSX.

Next gen = The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

PS1   - ! - We must build a console that can alert our enemies.

PS2  - @- We must build a console that offers online living room gaming.

PS3   - #- We must build a console that’s powerful, social, costs and does everything.

PS4   - $- We must build a console that’s affordable, charges for services, and pumps out exclusives.

PRO  -%-We must build a console that's VR ready, checkerboard upscales, and sells but a fraction of the money printer.

PS5   - ^ -We must build a console that’s a generational cross product, with RT lighting, and price hiking.

PRO  -&- We must build a console that Super Res upscales and continues the cost increases.

Damn Microsoft, when will they learn thats not a good idea.. oh wait.

Wait... Are people pretending it’s the first gen this is a thing?

Sony actually supports their consoles. Water is wet.

But yeah expecting some games to be cross gen in the next couple of years while more people make the transition to PS5. There are also going to be next gen  only games as well next year, with; Ratchet and Clank, Returnal, GT7 and possibly more. And a couple this year with Demons Souls and Astro's Playroom. This isn't anything new.
