Forums - Gaming Discussion - Best One-Off Titles/ Games Without a Sequel

Tagged games:

Is it possible for a game to be considered a critical and commercial success if it does not spawn a sequel/franchise?

What are some of the best One-Off Games?

For this discussion I am only talking about original games that did not have any sequels. The game must also not be a sequel itself or a spinoff of another title or series.

Some examples:

Tearaway

Flower

PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale

Freedom Wars

Jade Empire

Eternal Darkness

God Hand

Shadow of Rome

Vanquish

Awesome lightning-paced arcadey action with one of the coolest implementations of bullet time in a game to date.

Shadow of the Colossus

Some of the most epic boss fights in gaming history, supplemented by a powerful atmosphere and an amazing sountrack.

Puppeteer

A unique and charming platformer with tons of variety and imaginative design.

Bet with Liquidlaser: I say PS5 and Xbox Series will sell more than 56 million combined by the end of 2023.

PSASBR is a one off game... best without a sequel? Eh... IDK. There's some potential there, but a lot of really bad decisions.

If you'd count it as a one off title, Kid Icarus Uprising. It's not exactly a one off, but apart from the characters and plot it has really little to do with the other games in the franchise.

Codename S.T.E.A.M. is a game I love that was sadly underappreciated.

Eternal Darkness was great for its time (although it hasn't aged amazingly). Sadly the pseudo sequel never got off the ground, and with the issues with Dyack, probably nothing's gonna happen. Unless Nintendo wants to try and revive it... but I think maybe they should just leave it be.

Cave Story is pretty amazing.

Dragon's Crown

Princess Crown

VanQuish

Astral Chain (atm)

Binary Domain

Skies of Arcadia

Astebreed

Nex Machina

Akai Katana

Radiant Silvergun

Ikaruga

Odin Sphere

Alien Soldier

The Last Story

Metal Wolf Chaos

Ranger X

Bulk Slash

Mischief Makers

3D Dot Game Heroes

Phantom Dust

The Wonderful 101

Fragile Dreams

Gairares

Omega Boost

Xenogears (officially)

Bulletstorm

The Last Story

Damn, kicking myself for somehow forgetting this one!

Excellent game; an engaging battle system, endearing characters, and great sense of adventure.

Shadow of the Colossus is as uncontested as it gets in this category.

I'd mention Okami as well, but that one did have a spin-off on the DS, so I guess it doesn't count.

Astral Chain is pretty awesome but it might get a sequel eventually.

Thumper is never gonna be everyone's cup of tea, but it's certainly one of the great gaming experiences I've had and I don't think they'll ever make something else like it.

Edit: a couple years ago I'd be listing indie games here, it's funny we've reached a point where my favorite indies have become franchises. But yeah, here we are.

Lost Odyssey.
