Forums - Microsoft - Xbox acquires Bethesda

This is ridiculously massive. If MS plans to make the big guns exclusive (doubtful), I don't see them being included in GamePass on day 1. But with this and All Access, Xbox is finally equipped to potentially give Playstation a good fight in the hardware space. Hopefully Sony won't respond by acquiring a massive group and instead buy smaller studios associated with them (Bluepoint, Kojima Productions, maybe Oddworld Inhabitants) and expand their own studios.

Would love for them to buy Supergiant (one of my fav devs), Remedy, and the creators of Kena. If Kojima gets re-focused on gameplay again, would love a KJP buy also.

OT:  This is a bombshell. I had a feeling there was something else big coming. As much as $7.5bil is, it’s still just a drop in a bucket for MS as one of the top 3 largest companies in the world. This is good for me as an investor of MS. It’s a freakin megaton against Sony, tho. Only Bethesda game I’ve played is Doom, which I loved. Ironically, just started Doom Eternal last night (disappointed thus far).

I expect Sony to buy some more studios themselves, but it wont compare to what Microsoft did with this.

I'm thinking Sony would have a hard time buying new studio as of now. With Microsoft visible willingness to go all in, Studio who's approached by Sony would likely seek whether or not Microsoft is willing to put out more.

Square enix would be huge but indeed i do not think Sony is capable of doing that.

Partnership with Nintendo?

More realistic would be From Software but as far as market attention goes that is still peanuts compared with everything under zenimax umbrella.

Saying Sony "moneyhatted" the games when Microsoft literally bought the studio seems a little off. That rest seems fine.

I find it funny...Microsoft 'moneyhatted' games all the damn time with the 360 and people praised it and Sony fans hated it. Then Sony Moneyhatted games once the Ps4 dominated and up to the PS5's reveal and Microsoft folks are crying about it and Sony folks are praising it.

I wish people would just admit it: This is a fight to a lot of people and you're gonna sing when you're winning. Just be honest with yourself and we can have a frank and fair discussion about stuff without all the fake-nonbiased bull. People have favourites. I have favourites. I like Sony and I like Nintendo. Sales2099 likes Xbox. That's okay. Everyone should just admit outright that when their 'team' gets a goal, they want to cheer. Microsoft scored a HELL of a goal and I hate it, because I don't like Xbox. If Sony did the same damn thing I'd be cheering.

So many people on this forum go to such great lengths to pretend to be nonbiased, but none of us are. If I can go into a conversation accepting I'm a sony gal and other people are Nintendo folks and some people are microsoft goons, then we can have a friendly rivalry. IT's still a rivalry, but without any of the fake insincerity going around, nobody has to pretend they're not biased. Spending so much effort to dance around our true intentions make these conversations an absolute mess.

I want everyone to admit it: IF your console scores a goal, you cheer. This isn't about nonpartisan conduct or sportsmanship, it's very much so a matter of cheering for teams. Everyone on this forum and the internet as a whole will be better off if we accept that.

I'm always PC first and seeing all these IP's that I have love (Doom, TES, Prey) getting swallowed up by a huge company never-mind Microsoft is just well, shit.

But yeah it doesn't really affect me lol. And I will never cheerlead for these corporate decisions, warriors gonna warrior anyway :P

While Sony could get Capcom or Square, both would be pretty pricey, especially since they're both publicly traded, market cap on Square is like $7.6b right now, and stock prices would go up if there were rumors that Sony was looking to buy them out. It's more likely imo that Sony will aim to acquire some more AAA independent studios like Remedy or Bungie, and continue with timed moneyhat deals with publishers.

After todays megaton I wouldn't be too sure.

Take Capcom for example, they have a treasure trove of IP's that can bolster the PS5, PS Now (especially with legacy IP) & maybe even Sony Pictures. They have like $30 billion cash on hand and can recoup that massive acquisition in many areas. Sony has even stated the importance of IP's going forward. I think they'll still acquire smaller studios, some VR studios, but MS has started an arms race, and with Amazon and Google around, one if not the most profitable division for Sony might be in danger of losing market share, and ultimately profit.

Man didn't see that coming. Personally I would've much rather see MS prove they can do a decent job running the studios they have before they go in a buying frenzy like this, though. Obviously this is all Game Pass and Xcloud related and it sure seems like the GP business model only works for GAAS and episodic content. I guess we'll see where this is going but I got a bad feeling about this lol.

I think the only Bethesda game I play is ironically also one of the few games I play on PC, namely Elder Scrolls.
Gotta have those mods.

I can live without Fallout - Fallout 4 is the only one in that series I actually liked, the rest were too clunky for me (Good games but not for me) - but Elder Scrolls is a game that MUST come out for PS5. (not really, I just really hope so). Skyrim is one of my top-10 games of all time, over 1200 hours between all systems.

You don't think getting stuff like Final Fantasy XVI and DeathLoop and various other third-party exclusives temporarily PS exclusive is moneyhatting? It totally is, and that's a win for Sony. Just like it was a win when Microsoft kept getting Exclusive Skyrim content first and Call of Duty online shit first. IT's a legitimate strategy!

I think it is a deal. The deal doesn't involve money though. Otherwise Microsoft would crush them each and every time.

I have no problem with people doing it, I just don't think it is as simple as money.

Sony most likely leveraged their popularity or userbase.

hey yo we got 50 million more units sold compared to MS you better release on our system first for a year

Yeah, if you have a good PC you get virtually everything, eventually. and with Steam Sales...well, I bet literally every PC gamer has a backlog over 100 games.

But with me, I tried to avoid the console wars all last generation. I owned both a PS4 and XBO within a year of launch, and despite having both consoles I literally used the Xbox more to update the firmware than play games on it. I played more Zelda: Breath of the Wild in the first week of having it than I did the Xbox One in its entire 7-year run without a word of exaggeration. I didn't care about the console wars because I was on both sides, if the Xbox got an exclusive like Rare Replay or Sunset Overdrive, I could play them and not care. It just so happened to be that the console only ever got like 5 or 6 games that I actually cared about in 7 years that I didn't get on other consoles. I liked Gears 4 and 5, I liked Sunset Overdrive and Rare Replay, and the MasterChief Collection/Halo 5 were both alright even if I never cared much for Halo. but that's basically it. I got Cuphead and The Ori games on Switch. simple as that. That's it for the entire duration of the console's life cycle, so it got next to no play.

So going into Gen 9, I knew what console I'd be getting first, maybe only. Xbox hasn't impressed me for this long and my marketplace is slow so I am pretty short on funds; as a result I have to make a choice. this generation I CAN'T afford both and I can't justify getting a 700+ dollar console for a handful of games. I could when I got the Xbox One, I can't now. (That is, assuming these bethesda games are going to be Xbox Exclusive going forward).

As a result, I feel the console war stirring within me! When I see my 'team' winning, I cheer. when the other team scores a goal, I boo. This is me booing. I'm honest enough with myself to admit that. The second I can afford an Xbox Series X or have enough disposable income to do so, I'll stop caring again because I win either way. Until that happens, I'm on a team and I hope that team wins because then I win through proximity by getting great games.

Yeah, Skyrim or Elder Scroll series is the one that i am afraid to lose as well. I can live without Fallout and the rest, but Skyrim is very big for me.  I might playing it on pC (even tho i will not upgrade for a couple year down the road )

Big news. This is a bold move by Microsoft to make Bethesda titles exclusive or timed exclusive to Xbox and Windows. I'm trying to imagine PS5 without Elder Scrolls VI. But it's a real possibility.
