Forums - Nintendo - Square Enix: No plans for Kingdom Hearts ports on Switch, technologically difficult, but another Nomura game may be ported

....This is a company that repeatably lost its own source codes.T They apparently had to re-create the Source Code of KH for the collection originally on the PS3. Also porting studios. Do they not know what Tantalus is?

There is this thing called the Witcher 3. It is a very demanding game. It's on the Switch and is apparently boosting the profits of the company it came from significantly.

I now officially dub the 'Witcher 3 on Switch is boosting profits of developer notably , you have no excuse' declaration for nonsense from any third party developer about this. I mean really, older games and the Switch are not exactly historic failures Square.

The Democratic Nintendo fan....is that a paradox? I'm fond of one of the more conservative companies in the industry, but I vote Liberally and view myself that way 90% of the time?

They probably could've ported the remakes of the older games to Switch if they really felt it was worth it. But Kingdom Hearts III would be difficult, though still possible, to port over.

Sounds like a dumb move to miss out on easy money, but here is what I believe the reason to be, as a simple opinion.

It looks like Square did good with the FF ports to Switch, but the directors of KH are more Sony-slanted, so they were not ready for the success of the Switch and are probably keeping momentum for the PS5. None of this is about technical ability or profitability, but about momentum and desire. Until Nintendo finds a way of reviving interest for their platform without requiring moneyhatting, this will continue to happen. Nintendo fans should understand this and learn to be thankful for the excellent games provided to them, and wait patiently for Nintendo's managers to gain the confidence of more and more publishers over time, who will eventually bring more and more support to Nintendo. This is a loyalties thing, nothing more, and fans should accept that it will take a long time of winning streaks to correct this problem, and just celebrate their preferred company in the process. Over time, people will get the value of Nintendo and all will be repaired, so long as Nintendo keeps making sound business decisions and making a platform for everyone to love. By celebrating the company instead of loathing their losses, the community only grows.

Disney Universe sells good/excellent on the Nintendo platform.

Epic Mickey sells better than Xbox version of KH3.

I hate the KH conundrum and no more buy KH. But seems a god fit for a platform.

yeah nah yeah squares being lazy or not enuf cash from nintendo hahaha

I get a feeling platform loyalties are a much bigger deal with Japanese companies. It's not like the US where the money is not just the primary motivator, but the only motivator. While it may annoy some fans, I think it's commendable that some companies aren't universally into whoring out their products.

This sounds insane to me. I could see problems downgrading 2.8 and 3 to run on Switch, but you're telling me that 1.5 and 2.5 can't run on Switch when they were PS3 games? Melody of Memory has reused assets from 1.5 and 2.5 and it is coming to Switch. What a BS answer from Square.

Wonder what the other Nomura game he said might come to Switch is? No way FF7 Remake is running on Switch if they can't even get KH 1.5 and 2.5 to run on it. The Worlds Ends With You is already on Switch. Maybe I'm crazy but as far as I know, the only games that Nomura has directed are KH games and FF7 Remake. Unless they were referring to a game he was a producer on, rather than the director, which opens up many more possibilities, like Dissidia.

What sounds more insane?

A. A company who wants to move on and creating newer and better games instead of porting 5-10 year old games for Switch

B. Disgruntled vgc poster who is ranting why Square isn't porting old games to Switch when he can easily play the best version by buying a PS4Pro.

Just to be clear, we're talking about this series, right?

I would save the commendations.

I'm surprised how reticent some companies are to even try to port some of their games to the Switch. You'd think they would just hire a 3rd party studio to do the porting for them and just reap the benefits, but that's not the case, in particular for japanese companies. I wonder why that is...

You know it deserves the GOTY.

I wouldn't put it past SE, just think of how slow they are.

Here is an explanation on difficulties with porting to the Switch from stronger hardware.

https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2020/07/suikoden_successor_eiyuden_chronicle_could_be_our_first_confirmed_switch_2_game

Particularly, "when a lower spec platform has been listed on the campaign, it has invariably been too expensive, often times requiring downgrading textures, massive amounts of code rewrites, effectively meaning building two games."

So Nomura must have figured for most of his games building an entire new game on the Switch is not worth it.

Well I dont think people expected KH3. The 1.5 and 2.5 collections are PS3 games.

You have to remember that SE would expect greater sales and profits from KH3 vs 1.5 and 2.5. So while the port may be a bit cheaper, the sales and profits would be expected to be less.

I can accept that (with a grain of salt) for Kingdom Hearts 3

1.5, 2.5 and 2.8 in no way suffers this issue

Same as above, except 2.8 is same engine as KH3.

Silly excuse for anything prior to KH3/2.8.
With K3 however, I think I know what they might mean.
KH3 is doable, but also runs on UE4 which in general doesnt run particularly well on switch.
They might have realized that porting KH3 to Switch would mean downgrading the game below a level of quality would still be fine with.
So.. they simply dont want to butcher their game, just to have it run on switch.
