It's like this here in Finland, a country of social democracy. The more you earn the higher the percentage you pay on taxes. I play 24% + other stuff like retiremend funds. If I earned a bit more it would easily be 30%. Some pay 40-50%.

I'm not complaining though, our school system, healthcare etc. is good. For now at least.

Yes but he talked about socialized medicine so would be good if he gave the percentage we pay for healthcare etc instead of that, would give a more positive look on it.

Ah ok. I don't even know how much of it is for healthcare.

I forgot to add people with income do have to pay some money for medicine and going to public hospital, on top of paying taxes. And many people like me pay for insuraces too so we can go to private hospital for better and quicker service. Still, I don't mind paying if it means those less fortunate are taken care off. Makes my job easier too.

I'm not surprised if people from US find this crazy. But I still wouldn't call our system socialism. Socialism is evil :P

Here it is around 6-7 percent tax for everything healthcare i think.

bolded: Indeed,China has a socialist state and Russia too.

It can be good ofcourse but is open for many flaws.

40% tax in UK.
Jeremy Corbyn wanted to increase it even more. Someone gotta pay for all the socialism. Until the money runs out.

Every time socialism has been tried it fails. That’s because the government can’t possibly be efficient in managing it. Every example where entire economies collapse is due to inevitable government mismanagement.

People who want socialism like the idea of free stuff and aren’t willing to work for a better life like their forefathers. And they also tend to ignore the history which is that it’s good on paper but terrible in practice.

In Canada it’s a good combination. Semi high taxes for great government services but the economy is full capitalism.

Only for people who earn over 40k a year. And the first 10k is tax free too so even if you were earning 40k you'd only be paying 30% tax (40% of 30k).

Is that new? I just tossed 50,000 gross income into a UK effective tax calculator and got 12,400 as the taxes which would be ~25%.

Sorry I thought we were only talking about gross rates. Net rates will change a lot from person to person. Still its pretty brutal.

Gross rates are just kind of worthless because no one pays them. My gross rate would be 22% federal and 4% state for 26% based solely on gross income but my effective tax rate is actually 20%. Given that most tax systems are progressive there really isn't a point in discussing how crazy high the number no one will pay is.

Also, I currently pay about 5% of my income on health insurance so raising my taxes by 3-5% and getting me out of paying health insurance or greatly decreasing those payments would be a net benefit to me while also helping people outside myself.

Some polls I've seen seem to suggest that the majority of Americans would like to have a healthcare system similar to that of some European countries. To answer your question though, there is a percentage of Americans that equate socialism to communism and thus think it is bad.
