True, but let's face it The Order still holds up even today

Personally, I believe we will not see anything on the order of the UE5 demo until 2.5 years in this gen era. Maybe we might get a fighting game that tries to push detail and lighting that far since those environments will be much smaller. Either way, things are looking great for gamers.

This is....actually not true. Out of the gate, next gen games looked exceptional (both the 7th and 8th gens). We're not talking about a conference here, where people gas themselves up only to find that the show is nothing like they expected. When exclusives are shown off, particularly Sony's, this discussion will no longer be a question. |
Fair enough, I’ll be waiting to see Digital Foundry’s take when the time comes for FPS and resolution.
I don't expect it at all outside of maybe Naughty Dog or Suckerpunch, but even with them I'd be surprised. Feels like people don't really appreciate how insanely detailed that demo was. I am sure that good studios will be able to produce approximations that will look like it in certain scenes or while playing, but won't actually be that detailed.

| CGI-Quality said: Oh, that pre-release doubt. I won't have enough plates... I'll help Geoff serve them come launch. :D Moving on, here's more of that scene, except with more fur and cloth (BIG improvements coming to next gen)... NOTHING about this image/scene couldn't be done on next gen consoles (and not years in, but early on). Raytracing, cloth/fur, 4 and 5K textures, 9m triangles, dynamic weather and day/night time cycles. All of it. I do get some of the doubt (mainly because many gamers don't really understand what's going into these machines), but take it from someone who is in the mix (somewhat). You will not be disappointed with what's to come in 2021 (if you're a junky about it). |
I don't doubt that something like that can run on the consoles, but I guess that's because it looks noticeably less detailed than the demo. Looks probably better in motion.

I think we could get something that rivals the UE5 demo from Sony 1st party (Horizon ZD 2 maybe?).

I think we're going to have a repeat of the situaton that happened at the beginning of the PS4/XBOne: Multiplatforms on both gens looking almost identical and people pointing the lack of real difference out.
What in that scripted Killzone video was all that impressive?
If you're talking just visuals then sure, both consoles will launch with titles that look as good or better. If you're talking all the effects and physics, lighting, etc, highly doubtful. It's all subjective anyway. Nothing beats RDR2 on consoles to me, not even close considering the scope of the game.
| CGI-Quality said: Well, here's an idea of the exact type of quality you'll get by Jan 2022 (yes, mark it)...
Remember what I said about instancing? 4K? High poly count (8.7m polygons here)? That is a scene I rendered using all of the game engines I could while incorporating everything I've explained since 2018. This is the typical look for an open-linear game in the next generation. So, think Tomb Raider, Uncharted, or Gears of War... This is much like the Epic UE5 demo, but the character is of higher quality (quality you can expect the PS5 and Xbox Series X to pull off). All of that environment is explorable and expansive, even though it's not quite open world. When the first PS5 exclusives are shown off, come back and compare. Hint: You're welcome :) |
I'm ignorant on this topic so I can't answer the main question, but I wanted to say you did a great job there

If the rumors of horizon 2 hold, i do expect for that game to give this tech demo a run for its money. I mean just look at what they accomplished on base ps4.
