SE cocked up FF more so and you want them to do Mario RPG 2?

Naw.  Not the Final Fantasy team.  But Square Enix has signaled that they want to make more old-school JRPGs and the ones they have released in the near past have been pretty good.

The ones they've released aren't by their internal teams they're developed by Acquire and Silicon Studio.

This looks AMAZING. And now i'm no longer worried for this year. Big game in July annonced randomly on Twitter mid May.
Game looks fresh and full of ideas, you really see the difference with teams having lots of time to work on their projects.

Apparently partners are back btw.

I wouldn't call Paper Mario a big game exactly.  It has Mario in the title.  But, other than that, it's more of a single-A game IMO.  Not that there's anything wrong with it.  But, it's not going to sell 10m copies or anything like that.

Silly Nintendo dropping game announcements out of nowhere! This looks really good! Love the Origami theme.

For this series, origami seem like a non brainer. In hindsight, I'm surprised that didn't get to it already.

Hmm, I'm on the fence. Not fully convinced yet. However, I appreciate the announcement two months before relase instead of 5-12 years in advance.

Some people get all hot and bothered from game reveals.  But, the vast majority of is aren't convinced about the quality of a game from a single promotional video.  So, I'd say you're in the 99% or so who require more than the publisher's word that a game is good before falling in love with it.

17th of July ... it looks like it supposed to be one of the E3's stealth drops.

There is a chance that partners are in for the game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0tWmvbAVe4

A Chinese trailer showed a possible glimp of it.

Yeah hopefully this puts to bed people's worries that Nintendo just wasn't gonna release any games the rest of the year. If they didn't have a Fall / holiday lineup then this would have gotten pushed back there to fill the gap. So now we know they'll have good stuff lined up this Fall.

And omg you haven't played Super Mario RPG? It's a million times better than any paper mario game. Paper Mario is actual shit compared to Mario RPG. You're gonna love it!

Yeah, that is what I expected would happen until I saw this trailer had dropped.  I thought any potential summer releases would be pushed back until fall and just let Animal Crossing do all the heavy lifting in the summer.  But this trailer shows they have summer games.  Awesome!  They've still got a full slate of games for the year.

Also, yeah I've heard good things about Super Mario RPG, especially since Squaresoft was involved in their prime.  This pandemic has really given me a chance to make a serious dent into my backlog.  I finished several Switch games first.  Then I went and finished Phantasy Star 4, and I'm on Shining Force 2 right now.  Since I'm already in the 16-bit era of RPGs, Super Mario RPG seems like a good next choice.  It will also give me a chance to see if it has aged well or not.  I've often heard people compare Final Fantasy 6 and Phantasy Star 4.  I only finished FF6 a few years ago, but it was awesome.  It aged far better than PS4.  On the other hand I'm really loving Shining Force 2 right now.  It has also aged well.  I hope Super Mario RPG has aged well too.

Don't let anyone tell you that SMRPG is a million times better than "any" PM game (PM has gone in so many directions that you can't look at all the games in the same manner). It's a classic game that is well worth your attention if you can still appreciate RPGs from the 16-bit era, but all the ones hyping it to the moon are the ones wearing nostalgia-glasses. There are plenty of reasons why someone would enjoy a PM game more, be it the first two in the series that are more akin to SMRPG, or even the one that began the series' deviation, Super Paper Mario.

I know this goes without saying, but the best judge is yourself.

Oh, and I forgot to comment on the game. Looks okay, but I don't trust the current development team at all. The fast turnaround from the last game (only about 3.5 years) doesn't help either. If the game gets hype, then I'll look into it. Until then, I'll probably still be playing Xenoblade in July.

My head has been firmly under a rock for a while now if 3.5 years is now considered a fast turnaround period for a new game.

God, the Nintendo community here is such a breath of fresh air. Color Splash got a 76 on Opencritic (which indicates that it is anywhere from a decent to good game), and yet so many people on here have expressed fears that Origami King will be like Color Splash. It's like Nintendo fans know Color Splash isn't comparable to Nintendo's other games in quality, and own up to it.

Then we have Curl_6's thread that worried about Nintendo not having anything announced.

When Nintendo drops the ball the Nintendo community actually admits it! Not so for certain other fanbases that I won't name. :P

Paper Mario TTYD is the greatest game ever made to me. We know what quality they can deliver so we have higher expectations. CS and SS were still fun, innovative, and gorgeous games, but they weren't great Paper Mario games. The generic character models, different for the sake of being different combat system, lack of partners, simplification of the leveling system, and simplistic storyline prevented them from greatness. What happened to the amazing stories of TTYD and Super Paper Mario?

Eh, aesthetically the game looks nice, and I like the direction the story seems to be going (from what little info we have), but I need to see more gameplay before I can truly judge.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."
