Forums - Gaming Discussion - Dreamcast vs Original Xbox

I prefer...

Dreamcast 45 51.14%

Original Xbox 43 48.86%

Total:88

Dreamcast spawned Sonic Adventure 1 and 2.

So I have to say Xbox.

I am basing my knowledge from emulation circles, not youtube videos... Which tends to have a better knowledge base.

Either way... Less than 50 Dreamcast games actually leveraged Windows CE, the first of such titles was actually Sega Rally 2.

Windows CE was the exception and not the norm as far as game developer support on the Dreamcast goes.

What Dreamcast "fans" think isn't necessarily reality, the Original Xbox and Dreamcast had completely different hardware and software stacks and was owned by different companies, they are as different as the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 was.

And again... Sega wasn't the first company with online and with online purchases... I elaborated on that prior in this thread, so I won't do so again.
Memory Cards wasn't a new concept either... The visual component on the dreamcast memory card was though as far as I know. (Happy to be corrected.)

The Nintendo 64 had memory cards you could plug into the controller just like the Dreamcast and Original Xbox, but that is not a better design as it increases cost, complexity and weight of controllers... The display on the memory cards was not something that happened on the Original Xbox either.

Again MVG are expert on emulation, jailbreak, console security , console modding , hardware modding, software modding and not just Youtuber

You are watching an expert videos which far more reliable than unknown forum

Dreamcast and Xbox is indeed different, the same thing i can with PS2 to PS3 or PS3 to PS4.

He already said it's 75 title https://segaretro.org/Windows_CE

Yup even PS2 has memory card, but it's obvious from Xbox original design were indeed took inspiration alot from Dreamcast. It's different from 64 design as well so it's definitely inspired from Dreamcast. The controller is just another thing, Xbox Live Arcade, etc.

And online yes, Sega might not be the first , but it's the one who push  console to mainstream and great at that.

Also Windows Central are Microsoft news outlet , that's just prove a lot of Xbox fans were originally a Dreamcast fans.

From market point of view and business point of view it's obvious Xbox is Microsoft console targeting for Sega die hard fans.

He just needs to read the book Opening the Xbox.  Xbox was nearly fully BC with all DC games. MS used Dreamcast on focus tests developing Xbox and as you pictured they modeled their controllers after DC and nearly used VMUs.  Tho DLC was around in the 80s and even N64 had DLC so while DC did have DLC for games like Skies of Arcadia, it wasn't new. Just slowly becoming more standard.

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

I never got the chance to play a Dreamcast so my vote is Xbox.

I actually feel like DC and Xbox have a very different vibe; DC was like an arcade machine squeezed into a console box while Xbox was a PC squeezed into a console box, and late 90s arcade gaming and 2000s PC gaming were quite different in feel and philosophy. Maybe that's just me.

On a literal level this is correct. Dreamcast hardware was used in Arcade machines as the Naomi board. Xbox used PC parts and the controller ports were USB 1.0 just with different connectors. You could splice USB cables with Xbox controllers to work on PC and many did. You have to understand tho. SEGA fans were homeless. MS had connections with SEGA from DC and had a lot of ties. It was the perfect place for SEGA fans to go to. Sony and Nintendo were seen as rivals/enemies for years.

I was more referring to just the general vibe. Arcade ports were a big part of Dreamcast while Xbox was characterized by PC ports like Doom 3 and Morrowind. There's a big difference in feeling between PC and arcade gaming.

The OG Xbox is the best Xbox console and had much better games so it wins easily.

Xbox wins this one easily and honestly DC is mostly nostalgia dust by now. Yes, it had some amazing games in a short time span, but the Xbox had a bigger impact on the industry and managed to gather a far better gaming library. While most every major Xbox exclusive is still highly playable today, I would only go back to games like Power Stone and Crazy Taxi (Maybe a bit of JSR) on the DC. I'm sorry, I know that the DC was a great machine and the last great "hurrah" from Sega but the Xbox managed to outlive and outclass it on every front.

Vote the Mayor for Mayor!

And for people who say that the Xbox was a spiritual successor for the DC, while I get that point, I always felt that the Xbox was trying something on his own, and it was more like a hybrid PC and Console approach. It had some great Sega exclusives but also some awesome PC exclusives, especially in the later years.

Vote the Mayor for Mayor!

Dreamcast easily for me. Hate to state the obvious but it was way ahead of its time producing graphics that competed with consoles that came out 2/3 years after it. Also had more innovative games for me that still play great today. Also who doesn't love the little VMUs, they were unnecessary with most games tbh but the few times they worked they added a little something that we haven't had with any other console!

Biggest thing that held it back was the controller - I still don't know why it didn't have 2 analog sticks as that was the new norm. Xbox also launched with a shit controller but they did at least upgrade it with a much better 2nd revision.
