I just saw this and decided to check amazon top100 videogames. PS4 slim is currently #40, and the Switch is #56.
So that seems effective enough, if its able to outsell (currently) the Switch at 249$. Still sony should make such a move permanent, and announce it via marketing to show better effects.

Gray Switch is sold out until mid August and the Neon not showing up on the Amazon Videogames Top 100 for some reason (it's pricetag of $297.99 is hidden until you put it into your cart). If it would, then Neon Switch would be around the 9th or 10th spot right now, since it's ranked second on Switch Top 100.
Plus, like Zorg pointed out, the new models are incoming, so probably quite a few are waiting for those.
PS4 was around the 40th spot throughout winter and early spring, but then dropped off more and more. This here was the situation just after the Lite announcement and before Prime Day, so just 2 weeks ago. As you can see, PS4 wasn't doing do hot anymore compared to earlier this year. In March, PS4 slim was 35th, in April 37th, In May. it had dropped of to 46 already, and in June, it dropped to 81 while the Pro sits on 65.
In other words, it being on the 40th spot would put the console roughly where it was in April sales-wise, which was about 150k.
