Ok we're in rarefied air here.

Beside sharing a name with a member here, this landmark title almost lead to a steal-action spin-off, but it never materialized.

#19
Although this game debuted on a Nintendo system, its sequel was a Xbox 360 launch title.

Some think of this Wii sequel as more of a 1.5 than a 2

Super Mario Galaxy 2?

I'll drop a few hints for my next few as well:

#19: The first time this long-running RPG series had multiple versions.
#18: One of the greatest fighters of all time, with a thriving community even today
#17: One of the most unique modern RPGs, a love letter to SNES era RPGs
#16: Small robot cleans house, interacts with some of the most unique characters ever
#15: The latest entry in one of the original RPG series, with a Switch port coming next year

19. FE Fates
16. Chibi Robo

#20: Uncharted?

#19: Perfect Dark?

#19 is right. Here’s a bonus hint for #20: this game appeared on N64 but didn’t debut there.

Mega Man 2

  • Nintendo Entertainment System
  • 1990
  • Action platformer
  • Capcom
  • Guessed by Darashiva

One of the classics in the side scrolling-action genre. 'Mega Man 2' is one people will immediately think of when talking about great classic action games and for good reason. Everything that makes a good game is present here, from a good, iconic main character to amazing level-design to great music and visuals.

The game has the player first choose one of eight stages surrounding a certain theme with a unique boss. This boss gives the player new abilities when it's defeated that are helpful in other levels and against the other bosses. When all eight stages are completed, the ninth will become accessible, which consists of four more substages. These extra abilities add a certain aspect of strategy as the player could find the best way through these stages by trail and error, or sometimes, decide the order with some common sense.

Thankfully, the game features a handy password system. NES games usually have the problem of having to be completed in one sitting due to limited technology, but this game includes a clever system that kind of resembles a game of tic-tac-toe in the way it's layed out, but of course this allows for the more complicated password combinations necessary for it's non-linear level progression system. I should have a stack of papers with drawings of codes on them around here somewhere...

GoldenEye 007

  • Nintendo 64
  • 1997
  • First-person Shooter
  • Rare / Nintendo

The highest placed first-person shooter on the list is placed this high for a reason. 'GoldenEye 007' was of course groundbreaking and it is without a doubt the shooter which I had the most fun with. Sure, time took it's toll on this game, but when judging a personal list of "Greatest Games of All-time", the 'fun-factor' is a big piece of the pie. Usually, games based on movies are terrible, but among them, there's at least one that shines high.

The game consists of a list of levels each with a couple of objectives following the events of the movie, but taking liberties where it helps the gameplay and pacing. The development team took many of those liberties, and clearly had fun in their process of making this game. They even modeled the faces of the enemies after themselves! The single-player takes plenty of time to complete, but the game also includes an amazing multiplayer mode which paved the way for multiplayer shooters on home consoles. This influential mode puts players against each other in a death match in levels based on both GoldenEye as well as other Bond movies.

For the single-player, the game included the public secret of the cheat codes. Unlike regular cheat codes, most of these were of little real help to the player, but they were fun additions instead to change up gameplay somewhat, like having every character having a big head and long ape-like arms like Donkey Kong or every weapon shooting paintballs. My parents used to make me use the paintball cheat, because they thought the reddish stains that were supposed to be blood were apparently too much to see for my young self. But I already played Wolfenstein!

Ughh. Personal stuff (of the not fun variety) prevented me from being here much the last few days. And we've entered the top 20! Greatness of the games this high are unshakable in my mind, and they'll probably be featured in these lists for all time. Anyway, about half a day left before I'll post the next game, so if there's a quick guesser;

#18: The numbers of the years in this PC series seperately always add up to '9' with every game. For example, next year a new game will be released which has 1+8+0+0. My game is the one that didn't have such a name, a name with a year that adds up to 9, in the US, but rather takes the subtitle of the previous game's DS spin-off.

EDIT: Oh I see I'm actually three behind already. So here's another hint then, and I'll post this one today as well.

#17: Until recently, this game in this long running and acclaimed series was it's best selling, but last year's entry seems to be on track to at least double this previous record holder in sales.

One game still remains unguessed, so here's another hint for it:

#16: A direct sequel that picks up immediately after the first game. Originally a PSP JRPG that was later ported to the PC by Xseed Games.

Final Fantasy VII
(Change YoY: +1)

In some ways I have a slightly weird relationship with Final Fantasy VII. On one hand I absolutely love the game, but at the same time I also think that it is one of the games that gets generally overrated by a lot of people. It's a great game no question, but I can't agree with anyone who says its the best game ever or the best game in its own series. Again, I must stress that I genuinely think that it is an amazing game, and easily one of the best I've ever played. Just not the absolute masterpiece some people paint it as. Of course, it is also the game that effectively made JRPGs as a genre popular outside of Japan by itself.

For me personally, there are quite a few games in the series that are better than FF VII (including the very next game on my list), but there is a very good reason why so many people recall this game so fondly. The characters and story are both excellent and include many of the most iconic moments in video game history, the gameplay and materia system are still great, the music is among Nobuo Uematsu's best works ever, and the few elements that no longer hold up as well as 20 years ago, namely the graphics, don't really bother me. Simply put, this is a game that everyone should at least try at some point, as its influence is still felt today in the industry.

Final Fantasy VI
(Change YoY: Same rank)

From this point on you might notice a rather large number of Final Fantasy titles turning up on my list. Overall there are five of them in my top 50, and all of them are in the top 20, with VII being the lowest of the five and VI coming right after at 17. This is one of the games in the series that I got to years after its original release, as I never owned a SNES growing up. As a result by the time I got around to playing Final Fantasy VI I had already played through at least five other games in the main series. Of course, none of that really mattered in the end as VI immediately jumped close to the top of my all time favourite games list as you can see.

Even after all these years and numerous later releases there are certain things that Final Fantasy VI does better than almost any other game in the franchise, or any other game for that matter. Building on what earlier titles had done, it achieved levels of emotional storytelling that was almost unheard of in video games at the time, and to a certain extent still is. This is without question an amazing game, and as far as I'm concerned the best game ever made for the Super Nintendo. Throughout the 1990s Squaresoft was undoubtedly one of the top developers in the entire world, and Final Fantasy VI is among their greatest achievements ever. Play it.
