Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony files trademark suggesting backwards compatibility for PS5

Do you really think Sony will include software emulation for the PS5?

Yes, definitely. From PS1 to PS4. 20 31.25%

Yes, except PS3 because o... 29 45.31%

Maybe. 10 15.63%

No, they won't. 5 7.81%

Total:64

I've owned all PS systems except PS3 and Vita. So, I'd like the option to go back and play some of those games that I missed. Realistically, I probably wouldn't play many (Or any at all). But, I'd like the option nonetheless.

just copy Microsoft and do it their way. I'm down with that.

I have feeling that PS5 BC will be better than the piecemeal approach Microsoft is employing right now.

Believe it when I see it. We shall see

The poll is missing options for PS4 games alone.

Its inevitable IMO.

People genuinely think hardware manufacturers skip BC to resell games but in actuality they always make platforms BC when it makes sense.
Nintendo has done it every time difference in storage medium hasn't been an issue. Microsoft has done it for pretty much every platform in some shape or form, Sony removed proper BC from the PS3 because for a struggling platform with a price too high, the physical hardware implementation to allow PS2 BC was one of the easiest things to cut to save them money. PS4 isn't Because PS3's cell.

Next generation of hardware isn't going to have drastically different hardware or feature a change like PPC to x86. Likely AMD will supply the chips for both Microsoft and Sony, so BC is to be expected.

Replacing textures in old games without the need for editing any of the games code, you can do this with emulators such as dolphin.

at least it's all a question about the price, if they can do it without raising to much the price

PS5 will probably have PS4 BC, but i don't believe it will have PS1-3. Sony probably still thinks PS NOW is a viable option for true BC

I disagree. PS5 will only have BC for PS3.

You will need a PS6 to play PS4 games.

This is very interesting. It seems like B/C, but it's also a system where devs can create higher res assets for those older games and have them effortlessly placed into the game. So, I wonder if they'll set it up where B/C is free, but can drop a couple of bucks for a hi-res pack. I'd be game for that.

Wishful thinking.

Especially when you consider many remasters don't even improve the assets.

Unless the assets existed from the start like for a PC port, developers won't make the effort. If a studio cares enough to make new textures, its probably for a remaster. Not to improve a game via emulation.
