Forums - Sony - Games getting announced too early by Sony?

I’ve never dwelled on a game’s release enough for this to be an issue for me. I’m a huge GOW and thought nothing of it in the lead up to release. There are so many more games already out there to play for me to be camping out at headquarters waiting for a game’s release. Half the time I’m not even thinking about a specific game unless I’m viewing the content at a certain time.

In the time since GOW and Spider-Man announcements I’ve played The Witcher 3, TLOU Remastered, Uncharted 4, Lost Legacy, Shadow Of War, etc. plenty of things to keep my focus away from a game I can’t currently play. No knock to anyone else, but I feel that any fan of any console has enough to keep them occupied until that one big release is actually released.

PC GAMING: BEST GAMES. WORST CONTROLS

In December 2014, Cory Barlog said in a "questions from the fans" panel that a new God of War was in very early development (because a fan asked him directly about his next game). "Announced" is a huge exaggeration. The first real announcement was at E3 2016.

I think it ended up being a bit of a competition with MS, both were trying to show they had more games in development. As soon as MS ran out of steam (and products), Sony did seem to back off a bit and realise that ultimately it doesn't help.

The difference now is that Sony has lots of games coming out in the near term, while MS hasn't got a lot.. BUT I think there will be a quiet E3 this year from both Sony and MS as they look to consolidate and let games in dev have some time.

I really think E3 this year is going to be a let down in terms of previous years.

Making an indie game : Dead of Day!

I don't mind companies announcing games early, as long as they're honest about their release dates and don't try to claim that they're going to come out earlier than they really are. As long as we know from the beginning that the announced game is going to take some time to come out I don't mind it. I like knowing what some of the developers are making anyway.

Resident Evil 7 and Monster Hunter World were both AAA titles that came out less than a year after their announcements. There's absolutely no need to reveal games 2 or 3 years before they come out.

You can have some major games announced way early (TLoU 2's announcement time would've been OK), but you also have to have something announced that comes out soon, otherwise, every single E3 will be exactly the same.

I think Nintendo is nailing this: Last year they announced a bunch of games that have already been released (Mario Odyssey, Xenoblade 2, Kirby, FE Warriors, ARMS, Mario + Rabbids, etc.). So while we can expect more pieces of information about Metroid, Pokémon, and Yoshi in this year's E3, we can also expect surprises, since there are lots of "free slots" in Nintendo's line-up.

But that's just my opinion. I know a lot of people like to know what every studio is doing at all times, and I totally understand why. My anxiety doesn't let me like that, I guess hahahaha

It's a marketing strategy. Show everyone the games that will be out later, they buy a console now and games to go with it. There's no reason to be quiet about their game releases especially since their games aren't being canceled.

I don't understand this way of thinking, to be honest. If a game is announced that I'm interested in playing then I don't become NOT interested because I have to wait. It just don't make any sense to me.

If it looks good then I'll play it whenever it releases.

Games are announced too early by all. Crackdown 3, sea of thieves, they were both early announcements as well.

Nintendo is better than the other two but botw... And I imagine metroid prime 4 won't release till at least 2 years after the announcement.

Games should be revealed no more than 18 months in advance, and initial reveal should include in-engine footage not just a cgi trailer and absolutely not just a name or logo.

I think it's ridiculous that anyone announced games more than a year before launch, and I frankly think it should be more like 6 months at most. I don't understand why holiday games aren't just announced at the preceding E3. It's not like dry holiday would be hit any worse by this.
