Resident Evil 7 and Monster Hunter World were both AAA titles that came out less than a year after their announcements. There's absolutely no need to reveal games 2 or 3 years before they come out.

You can have some major games announced way early (TLoU 2's announcement time would've been OK), but you also have to have something announced that comes out soon, otherwise, every single E3 will be exactly the same.

I think Nintendo is nailing this: Last year they announced a bunch of games that have already been released (Mario Odyssey, Xenoblade 2, Kirby, FE Warriors, ARMS, Mario + Rabbids, etc.). So while we can expect more pieces of information about Metroid, Pokémon, and Yoshi in this year's E3, we can also expect surprises, since there are lots of "free slots" in Nintendo's line-up.

But that's just my opinion. I know a lot of people like to know what every studio is doing at all times, and I totally understand why. My anxiety doesn't let me like that, I guess hahahaha
