I think it ended up being a bit of a competition with MS, both were trying to show they had more games in development. As soon as MS ran out of steam (and products), Sony did seem to back off a bit and realise that ultimately it doesn't help.
The difference now is that Sony has lots of games coming out in the near term, while MS hasn't got a lot.. BUT I think there will be a quiet E3 this year from both Sony and MS as they look to consolidate and let games in dev have some time.
I really think E3 this year is going to be a let down in terms of previous years.
