Forums - Nintendo - Will the Switch outsell the Wii?

Yes, especially since console life spans are getting longer and longer.

It will maintain it's huge sales for a while unlike the wii which dropped like a rock.

I think it is still too early to tell.  But I'm gonna give a temporary verdict and say No.

My reasonings:

1) In three years down the road 4K, HDR and VR will be a lot more mainstream than they are today and people will be yearning for more power.  By that time the PS5 will come out to fullfill that need (And the X2 will be on its way).

2) We are already seeing some full fleged PC-Console games being ported to movil phones (like PUBG and Fortnite).  And in some years that will also be a lot more common thus making the Android/IOS market even more competititve against the Handheld market.

So yeah, I think the Switch will sell really well this and next year but the real test of fire will begin in its fourth year on the market.

Now, with that being said, I will reassess the situation arount this time next year to see if there is something that would make me change my mind.

It has the entire portable market to itself while also having access to the home console market.

to be fair nothing changed

3ds also had the market for itself, the only challenge for Nintendo handhelds was the psp

also everytime someone brings up pokemon baffles me

that game franchise was in all nintendo handhelds but people act like its an unprecedented

Actually things are quite different compared to 3DS, Switch is selling to home console market also, Switch offers home console IPs also, and Switch offers full home console games. I mean there is reason why Switch is selling better than 3DS whitout huge price cut like 3DS needed to have and despite huge price point difrence $180 compared to $300.

You used biggest Nintendo fail ever like example!? :D   I mean I can also say look at Wii.

Also Switch has higher value in any case like hybrid than like just a handheld or just a console.

why would i look a outlier? nintendo home  consoles have been on a down trend since the  nes, each one selling  less then the other, nintendo hit lighting in a bottle with wii, and there next home console followed the expected down trend.

Because you used biggest Nintendo fail ever like example, there are obvious reasons why Wii U is worst selling Nintendo console, and that dont have anuthing with "down trend" with Nintendo home consoles, Wii is actualy proof of that. Wii was Nintendo home console, there is no any need to pretend like Wii didn't happen. You saying that Wii was "lighting in a bottle", than I guess Nintendo again catch "lighting in a bottle" with Switch. ;)

Also agin, Switch has higher value in any case like hybrid than like just a handheld or just a console.

The Switch will become the best selling console of all time. However you won't be able to tell it by 2018's performance. 2018 will be mostly ports and a few new 1st party titles here and there. In 2019, there will be Pokemon and more 3rd party exclusives. That is when Switch will really start to take off.

Well, you constant confidence is baffling. We don't know what might happen mid-generation. First impressions wearing off, PS5 and XB2 coming and stuff like that. It might go either way.

Anyways, 150M (PS2) is a pretty hefty goal. If you keep selling this point with such confidence, you sound more and more like JohnLucas.

i'm using the last dedicated nintendo home console as a example. wiiu actually had everything going for it, it's the successor to the best selling nintendo home console ever, it a gigantic jump graphics wise from the wii, and the gamepad was actually a cool concept. only reason it failed because there simply wasn't a market for a dedicated nintendo home console, nintendo knew this, that's why they decided to combine both markets into one, Which was the best move they could make.
