When you think of the NES, what do you think when you think software? Now do the same for SNES, Genesis, PS1 etc. Did a fucking PORT come to mind? I'm guessing not.

And how many of these non-ports which come to mind were released in the first 12 - 18 months of the system?

Here are the NES games of its first 18 months:

30 games after 18 months, and most of the better ones are ports from arcade:

So where are the NES games of the first years that come to mind and aren't ports?

Such a small selection after 1.5 years (a handful of good titles and a total of 30 games) would be unacceptable today, especially with that much competition.

Of course the library has to be enhanced by good titles ported from other systems.

Do a list of all the 4 year old ports Nintendo brought to the SNES, N64 and GC. I'd wager Switch has already beat them.....combined.

Why not comparing the number of new games per year? What does it matter how many additional ports from former gens are also available to the new system?

Or don't you care about the number of good new games as long as there are few ports?

That's good for Switch and all..but does anyone else think that Crash games suck?? I was super surprised that this game is selling so crazy well on ps4. I only ever played the first Crash game, but in the age of Super Mario 64 when I played Crash I was like uhhh what a mediocre game! Maybe the later games were better but they didn't seem like they'd be better. Maybe Mario 64 being like 100 times better just spoiled me. Anyway apparently they are popular so I'm sure it'll sell a bunch on Switch and is a solid grab for Nintendo.

Exactly my thoughts, too. I tried Crash1 once and never had fun. Not only did it feel very limited, it also bored me. But okay, if others like it, fine.

The comparisons to Mario Allstars weren't offensive enough for you so you had to go and bring Mario 64 into it?

I think its unhelpful to compare it to Mario 64. They're very different games; Mario uses the third dimension to facilitate exploration in open ended stages, while Crash is more of a 3D interpretation of a classic 2D platformer, with levels essentially linear obstacle courses.

They offer quite different takes on how to move the platformer genre into 3D, and while Mario was ultimately the more influential of the two, I think Crash has its merits too.

Crash 3 was one of my favorite games if the era. It was technically stunning and gameplay was tight. I even beat it again on PSP. For some reason, when I played it in PS4, it just felt different. Not really fun for me. Back in it's day, it was something special though.

My plan was to play the entire trilogy in order with the new coat of paint but I doubt I got halfway through Crash 1. It just felt like a chore.

As for this discussion on ports, I can only speak for myself.

I've always been a fan of "whole libraries". If the console has games I want to play and it's not gathering dust, I'm happy. A game can be new, old, third party, exclusive, or whatever. Every release makes the library stronger and I'm glad to have them. Switch has a lot of ports but they're ports I'm excited to play. Hell, I want MORE!

Btw I'm curious to hear Dr. Vita's response to this lol.

Why, was he insistent that it would stay a PS4 exclusive?
