At this point they are better off trying something new that offers  a phone expereince unlike anything else on the market. Even if a PlayStation Phone line is a niche market that only sells around the same rate they are currently, the massive increase in profits and mindshare from running their own OS, and connecting all users to the PlayStation Store would be a huge step forward from the continued loss of marketshare and the tight rope they walk in terms of profit.

The thing about the smartphone market... is that you either go super focused and downsize (like oneplus) where you have an all round smaller division smaller budget and make one great phone every year. That way even if you are selling only 4-7M phones a year it will still be a massive improvement. Or you go big and target the casuals that buy the samsung and iphones. In that case though its all really about the size of your marketing budget. The casuals basically buy what they see a lot, you want their attention, then market the hell outta your product.

I think they should go the Oneplus route. Make the best $500 phone money can buy and sell it only on their website and amazon. But they have to at the very least make the phone desirable. If Oneplus can do it so can sony.

They need to ship 2.5 million this quarter to reach their fiscal year forcast. Here are previous Jan-March results.

2014-3.0 million

2015-2.4 million

2016-2.3 million

2017-2.9 million

Avg-2.65 million

So it looks like Sony has a very strong chance of meeting and possibly exceeding their shipment goals.

Nintendo 483 billion yen revenue 116 billion profit Sony 2672 billion yen revenue 350 billion profit Seems like Nintendo is nearly twice as profitable per dollar revenue than Sony is. Sony needs to start charging more to catch up

If you just compare Nintendo to Sony's game division, then this is the sort of thing you'll always see.  Sony uses the "razor and blades" model for their consoles and Nintendo does not.  Sony always sells their hardware at a loss at launch.  Then they more than make the money back by selling games and licenses.  (Have no idea what it costs to make a PS4 right now though.  They might be breaking even or making a tiny profit on hardware at this point).

Nintendo does not like to sell hardware at a loss.  That is one reason why they decided to make their consoles less powerful than competitors.  For example Switch manufacturing cost is $257, while they sell it for $300.  The result is that even on the total flops like Wii U and Gamecube, they still make a profit.  And when they have a huge hit like Switch or Wii, then they make mega huge profits.

Nintendo has only ever had 1 year where they reported a loss since they've been in gaming (almost 40 years now).  It was the year the 3ds launched, because they gave it a huge price cut the first year.  Sony on the other hand has had a lot of losses during the past 10 years, and a lot of it had to do with the PS3.  It is a good thing for Sony that they usually are the home console leader, because they have to be just to stay profitable.

Kinda interesting that PS4 has outshipped Switch in each of the 3 quarters this fiscal year but based on both companies projections, Switch will outship PS4 this quarter.

Q1 PS4-3.3 million NSW-1.96 million

Q2 PS4-4.2 million NSW-2.93 million

Q3 PS4-9.0 million NSW-7.23 million

Q4 Projections PS4-2.5 million NSW-2.87 million

Are we now at profitability per revenue? Sony has more revenue and is more profitable. That's it. What you do is spinning.

Well, it has to do with both consoles age, Ns should grow a lot this year and ps4 should be slightly up or down

Very nice results for sony.

Ya i think their shipments numbers will basically flip flop next fiscal year.

FY03/18

PS4-19m

NSW-15m

FY03/19

PS4-16m

NSW-20m

Or something similar to that.

Excellent results! Most segments had extremely strong quarters, and gaming is becoming a very stable profit driver for Sony. Even their consumer electronics, which have been the dark patch for a while are starting to shape up nicely. Mobile is still not doing good though. Wonder when they're going to cut their losses and sell the division. Could spend the money better on other things.
