Even if a PlayStation Phone line is a niche market that only sells around the same rate they are currently, the massive increase in profits and mindshare from running their own OS, and connecting all users to the PlayStation Store would be a huge step forward from the continued loss of marketshare and the tight rope they walk in terms of profit. |
The thing about the smartphone market... is that you either go super focused and downsize (like oneplus) where you have an all round smaller division smaller budget and make one great phone every year. That way even if you are selling only 4-7M phones a year it will still be a massive improvement. Or you go big and target the casuals that buy the samsung and iphones. In that case though its all really about the size of your marketing budget. The casuals basically buy what they see a lot, you want their attention, then market the hell outta your product.
I think they should go the Oneplus route. Make the best $500 phone money can buy and sell it only on their website and amazon. But they have to at the very least make the phone desirable. If Oneplus can do it so can sony.
