Nintendo 483 billion yen revenue 116 billion profit Sony 2672 billion yen revenue 350 billion profit Seems like Nintendo is nearly twice as profitable per dollar revenue than Sony is. Sony needs to start charging more to catch up

If you just compare Nintendo to Sony's game division, then this is the sort of thing you'll always see.  Sony uses the "razor and blades" model for their consoles and Nintendo does not.  Sony always sells their hardware at a loss at launch.  Then they more than make the money back by selling games and licenses.  (Have no idea what it costs to make a PS4 right now though.  They might be breaking even or making a tiny profit on hardware at this point).

Nintendo does not like to sell hardware at a loss.  That is one reason why they decided to make their consoles less powerful than competitors.  For example Switch manufacturing cost is $257, while they sell it for $300.  The result is that even on the total flops like Wii U and Gamecube, they still make a profit.  And when they have a huge hit like Switch or Wii, then they make mega huge profits.

Nintendo has only ever had 1 year where they reported a loss since they've been in gaming (almost 40 years now).  It was the year the 3ds launched, because they gave it a huge price cut the first year.  Sony on the other hand has had a lot of losses during the past 10 years, and a lot of it had to do with the PS3.  It is a good thing for Sony that they usually are the home console leader, because they have to be just to stay profitable.
