Forums - Nintendo Discussion - So Far, Nintendo Switch is the Fastest Selling console of all time.

This is sold through.
It is stated that. Both under the hardware and software.
Not only that, they upped their projections for 31st March from 15m to 17.76m. They wouldn’t do that if they had only sold 12.17m.

many credible reporters, like Zhuge, are also saying it’s sold through. Not shipped.

You all saying “it’s always been shipped”
So? They can’t change that?

That Nintendo IR page is shipped numbers. Switch has shipped 14.86 million and WiiU has shipped 13.56, so what Zhuge said is still correct. Switch has sold in more than WiiU has sold in. Probably sold through more than WiiU as well.

The actual impressive data here is the software numbers. Mario Oddysey is a beast and so is MK8, Zelda and Splatoon. The hardware sales are actually par for course with other Nintendo handhelds. They have always tended to sell faster than home consoles.

You forgot the 3DS, it sold 15.03 million consoles in 308 days.

  • 15.03 million / 308 days = 4880 consoles per day on average
  • 14.86 million / 303 days = 4904 consoles per day on average

Very close so far, and the Switch had the advantage of the global launch.

It's weird to see the 3ds pretty much identical to the Switch in terms of sales at this point, when we look back and don't think of it as being a very impressive selling machine.

Well, the software sales of the 3DS after these 308 days were only at 37.5 million units (tie ratio = 2.5 games) while the software sales of the Switch are much better (52.6 million units; tie ratio = 3.5 games). The 3DS also had a huge price cut for half of the time frame.

True but the 3ds also had no games at this point xD.

But yeah, Switch software sales are incredible for 1st party titles.

So they plan on shipping 2.9m units from December 31st to March 31st... what's the issue? Sold through has been adjusted on VGC to 13.8m.

Yet again this number (14.86m) is shipped, and no they wouldn't just change that without stating so.

The issue is that if they had sold 12.17 as of Dec 31st, which is what everyone is saying, that would mean they plan to ship up to 17.76m consoles as of March 31st? No. They can't be expecting to even sell 2m in that time frame considering the releases. Whereas upping the shipments to 17.76m from 15m, with sales being at 14.86m, having a little under 2m consoles is feasible for this time.

12.13 million is this fiscal year as in April thru December.

That does not include the 2.74 million from last fiscal year (March).

Total thru Dec is 14.86 million with 17.74 million being what they expect thru March 18.

With the price cut, Nintendo sacrificed 3DS's sales curve so that it would have a good first year.

Its because they are under different circumstances.

3DS needed to reduce its price by 1/3 to start selling strong numbers while Switch has done this at full price and still having shortages in certain areas.

Also 3DS peaked in its first year while Switch looks to build off its great start and have a better 2018/2019.

I am huge fan of Switch, but I feel this date is arbitrary in an objective sense. It would be nice to see how all the consoles compare exactly 12 months after launch. That seems like the most objective date to me.

I dont think it will fall behind with the first two quarters this year... unless some surprised release

How is the end of a fiscal quarter arbitrary? Its not.

We cant compare exactly 12 months from launch because Sony/Nintendo do not report that way, they report numbers at the end of each fiscal quarter.
