I'd put Metal Gear Solid 2 above Halo: CE for 2001.

Halo was a technically impressive achievement, but when I think back to Halo, I remember low poly characters and flat textures. When I think back to MGS2, I think that game still looks good today.

This. I didn't like Halo's graphics (on PC) just a few years after its release, whereas MGS2's graphics look good even today. It's not impressive anymore, but it has aged remarkably well - which, in my opinion, is really special for a game aiming to have fairly realistic graphics.

for 2001 I'd also say Rogue squadron 2 was the best looking game that year above both halo and mgs 2

Just don't try to tell others that their opinion is wrong.

What opinion? Journey looks good but nowhere near has the best graphics because its graphics are minimalist, it's an objective fact.

Deus Ex (2000) - a game that pushes the boundaries of what the video game medium is capable of to a degree unmatched to this very day.

Nope, it's a subjective opinion. There's no way to measure or verify the how good something looks, smells, sounds, tastes... All of these things are always 100% subjective.

Ok, if you want to be absurdist.

GTA 4 doesn't come close to Motorstorm: Pacific Rift in terms of graphics. Even the PC version doesn't hold up quite as well as Motorstorm. GTA 5 again doesn't come close in terms of graphics to Driveclub and many other games released that year. I understand your point about Uncharted but Halo has comparable graphics in bigger environments and more enemies on the playing field.

So does GTA. You can talk up Motorstorm and Driveclubs car models all you want, GTA have a LOT more to offer than just that. They also have excellent character models and really good looking combat. I especially thought the explosions looked awesome in both GTA 4 and 5. Neither Motorstorm nor Driveclub can match them in those aspects, or the sheer level of detail that GTA has.

The thing is GTA doesn't have graphics in the same league as Motorstorm and Driveclub. Being open world matters only if they are atleast comparable in termsd of visuals which they aren't. I've played them all last year and the differences are huge. Halo is very comparable to Uncharted and seems to havea  lot more going on that too in a bigger environment which is why its just above uncharted but GTA 5 on PS4 is outclassed even by Infamous: Second Son that same year. GTA 4 doesn't look nearly as good as Gears 2 either which released that year so these games weren't even in the contest.

Sheer level of detail in what terms are you talking about. GTA 5 has its roots in last gen tech and it shows with the geometry, textures and the polygon count is lower for each object in the game. The character animations are not smooth either they just look really bad.

Minimalist! did u play journey?? or your one of those guy a who thinks graphically taxing game can only be achieved in FPS or TPS.. That year Nobody did Cloth, sand and fluid simulation better than Journey that too with multiple NPC, even PS4 remaster had to let go some rendering techniques as it was so CELL spu dependent. But I m pretty sure u dont care.. would love to know which did you considered better in 2012

Please tell me u kidding. PS2 games did those things just as good. Any triple A game had better graphics than Journey in 2012. My choice would be Hitman Absolution (on PC obviously). This topic is about graphics, not preference of visual style.

LMAO Hitman over Spec Ops, Dishonored, borderland 2 and max payne 3?? ok i think I have enough sensibility to gauge with whom i should have conversation about "graphics". And about "even PS2 did those thing" considering when PS4 omitted many of post processing technique from PS3. Continue drinking your cool aid that visual style has nothing to do with graphic. XD "absolution"
