Forums - Sony - Do you think the PS5 will be a VR only console?

Have you tried VR yet?

Yes! 21 19.63%

Nope. 86 80.37%

Total:107

That would be stupid.

Sorry, 14 Months. Still less than the Pro which has greatly outsold it. Up tp June, the PS4 Pro represented 1 in 5 PS4s sold since its release. That's over 2 million units. It's surely sold more than that in the 7 months have followed, meaning it's sold more than PSVR.

During the Holidays, the PSVR was on sale and selling for less than $200 while the PS4 Pro never saw a price cut, and was selling at twice the price. If the PSVR didn't outsell the Pro, it wouldn't bode well for Sony's confidence in VR going forward. Sony is doing everything they can to try and make VR gain traction. And what do they have to show for it?

The best selling VR headset ever at 2 million in sales. How impressive.

The fact that it's the best selling VR headset with *only* 2 million speaks volumes for how niche PSVR still is. It has not come close to having mainstream appeal, and there is no indication that the 3% adoption rate it's experienced so far is going to improve significantly enough for Sony to even entertain the idea of shipping the PS5 with a VR headset.

One is a accesoiry, the other is a full console lol.

You need to already own a PS4 to buy a PSVR but can just buy a PS4Pro without ever owning a PS4. I dont think that comparison make any sense.

And selling just 1 Ps4Pro for 4 Ps4Slim doesnt sound like a success to me either tbh.

No, that'd be a dreadful idea. Don't think they should ever force VR on everyone cause there's many people like me who don't care for it.

yeah but most people that dont care just dont care because they havnt tried it yet (do you?). They dont know how it is and what they are actually missing out.

Basically like when TVs became a thing and people would had said "im not interested in TVs. I have read books all my life and thats what I like. Havnt even seen a TV but i dont care".

In the end they will most likely change 90% of the peoples mind that "dont care" pretty quickly.

Yeah I've tried Skyrim & GT Sport in VR, was a novel experience but I can't imagine only ever playing games with my head trapped in a VR headset. I don't game often anymore but when I do I like sit back, put the surround sound on and play on the big screen. I'm not so desperate to detach myself from the real world just to immerse myself in virtual reality. Personally, I don't feel comfortable with having my visual & auditory perception solely focused on the VR experience.

Fair play to those who enjoy it, I'm glad it exists for them. However, making it mandatory just takes away consumer options which is never a good thing. It should only ever be an accessory for those who want it.

What kind of software was released for the PSVR in that time?  What kind of software for the pro?

we dont have any real sales number either so the comparison is kinda dumb at all, especially with many people that pick up a psvr buying a pro sooner or later anyway to make their vr expierence even better. Sony actually said that the pro ownership is especially high for vr owners.

Also PSVR is still a completly new medium while the ps4/pro is a established console. People know what it does (more performance, highger resolution) like basically all playstation upgrade did before as well.

I dont think the comparison makes any sense at all. PSVR is expected to increase in sales heavily, not sure if its the same for the pro.

The pro has zero exclusive games. In fact, Sony won't allow anyone to make any game exclusively for the PS4 Pro at this time. Meanwhile, the PSVR has dozens of exclusive games like R.I.G.S., which Sony gave away to all PS+ subscribers.

Like I said, we know the PS4 Pro sold *at least* 2 million by June 2017.

PS4 Pro vs PSVR is a completely fair comparison. They're both new Playstation products. They both enhance the Playstation gaming experience. They were both released at about the same time. They're both completely optional from the core PS4 experience. Yet, one has been more expensive since its announcement, has never dropped in price, and has sold more.

I can guarantee you if PSVR was outselling PS4 Pro you would have mentioned it in this thread as evidence to the popularity of it.

VR is not a completely new medium. I can remember playing Duke Nukem 3D VR at a theme park in the 90's. Just because Sony decided to wade into the VR waters doesn't make the experience new.

Oh come on...you're really grasping at straws here. Your theme park experience has nothing to do with consumer VR of today and PSVR has really nothing to do with Pro...if at all Pro has hindered PSVR's success, since there is only so much money people can spend. And the huge difference here is that PSVR only sold to people with an according console, the Pro did not.

You're throwing two different things in one pot, that's not helping the discussion at all. PSVR was sold out for half a year or so, so was the Pro, so I guess it's safe to say both are meeting or even exceeding expectations.

No need to downplay anything here.

No and it would be the first PS system I didn't buy if so.

I assuming PS5 is no later then November 2020 then 0 chance is will be VR only. I personally love my HTC Vive and depending on the price I upgrade it to the new Vive pro when it comes out. That being said the technology is no where close to being advance/mature enough to be powered by a console by 2020 at a affordable cost. I bought the VIVE knowing that the resolution was not yet high enough for me to never notice the pixels or that even my 1080TI not going to power the kind of graphic I would really like to see in VR. It still not ready for mass consumption through.

Most people I know are wowed the first time they experience the vive but not enough to go out and buy it them selves. Some of them did go get the PSVR since it a lower cost of entry but it something they use once in awhile and not the kind of hours Sony hope to see log on there consoles.

I do believe VR is the future but am thinking more like 2027 then 2020 when it mature enough for a console to be dedicated to it.

This thread and OP's attitude are hilarious.

Btw, obviously not. Sony is not crazy and wouldn't want another PSP Go on their hands (a stance where they tried and risked something new/advanced, but ultimately failed because the market wasn't ready).

I bet VR will be a more accessible and better experience on PS5, but Sony wouldn't want to limit their mass appeal to only people that care about VR. There are people that tried and didn't like it, there are people with motion sickness and there are people who would not want to pay more $$$ for something they don't care that much.

Every game being a VR experience would limit graphics A LOT as well. I doubt Sony would want that. The only way to avoid it would be by making an extremely powerful and expensive console. I also doubt Sony would want that.

So... no. I'm 99% sure this won't be the case next generation.

It also won't be the case the gen after next generation, exactly for the reasons you mentioned. No matter how popular VR becomes, and it will become much more popular, it will never come close to full coverage of the gaming market. It's not supposed to either hence why I don't understand why some people seam so scared of it, as if it would take anything away from them. If anything it adds to gaming as a whole.

Exactly. It's an extra to enchance the experience for those who are willing to pay. And Sony is about that: options. That's why it doesn't make sense to force people to pay more for something some may not want/have the means to.

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

Is this thread for real?

VR still a thing?

No.

Long answer: Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

Real Answer: It may be become VR supported, but I don't think the majority of people will want to play games that way strictly. I sure wouldn't.
