Forums - Sales - PS4 total sales has surpassed 3DS numbers

3DS is going to make a comeback just like XB1 will, it's only a matter of time...a really really long time...in another dimension far far away...

PS1   - ! - We must build a console that can alert our enemies.

PS2  - @- We must build a console that offers online living room gaming.

PS3   - #- We must build a console that’s powerful, social, costs and does everything.

PS4   - $- We must build a console that’s affordable, charges for services, and pumps out exclusives.

PRO  -%-We must build a console that's VR ready, checkerboard upscales, and sells but a fraction of the money printer.

PS5   - ^ -We must build a console that’s a generational cross product, with RT lighting, and price hiking.

PRO  -&- We must build a console that Super Res upscales and continues the cost increases.

Excellent news.PS4 really did deserve it.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

I find that Nintendo owns the handheld market. It's definitely no slouch. Got one for each of the kids this Christmas while we also got new PS4 games.

Perfect example right here, folks! 3DS has the benefit that the PS4 really doesn't have. Price and the fact it is so small there can literally be 4-5 per household depending on how many people live there and want one. No comparison yet the PS4 STILL miraculously tops it - now THAT is something!

HH were dying, then Ninty had the hybrid idea, merging them with home consoles. This should be enough to keep their market alive, even if it will have to rely on the now bigger home console market to remain viable. Nevertheless, when mobile CPU will be strong enough, almost surely MS and Sony too will offer, besides pure home models, a hybrid one, that will always run the game logical edngine full power, as gameplay must remain the same, just disabling some services when undocked to lower a little CPU load, while it will scale up the graphics engine, running the GPU full steam, when docked, switching it to lower res and lower FX low-power mode when undocked. It will take time, as next gen will obviously have to be noticeably stronger than current one, so at least mobile CPUs will have to be stronger, even undocked, than those in PS4 and XBOne entry level models APUs. What makes it not just feasible, but also viable, is that CPU power is the only obstacle, as scalable graphics engines have been the rule, not the exception, for years, and PC, smartphone and tablet markets already use a far wider scalability range than what home consoles and NS currently use.
Until then, though, NS and 3DS alone won't be enough to take portables even vaguely near their past glory, but with three competing hybrids, even not ever reaching again the peak of DS-PSP era, we could get a lot closer to it than now.
The only unhappy gamers will be graphics whores, as while triple A games will generally develop with graphics at the level of docked GPU power, and scale them down when undocked, and the richest ones will even make optimised graphics for each of the two (or even three if and when there will be premium consoles too) GPU power levels, projects with smaller funds will develop at undocked graphics level and just upscale them when docked.

Beating the 3ds is even more impressive when you think of it like that. Today is historic as ps4 just cemented sony as the Victors of the 8th generation of consoles. Congrats Sony, congrats ps4 and congrats everybody who bought it.

Sony wins this gen. But it's sights are set much higher. Ps3, 360 and pap are next. Then it will target the ps1 and Wii. I have no doubt it beats them all.

great news for PS4......another milestone achieved.......
now next target psp , xb360 or ps3...
which PS4 will overtake in 2018

If it sells equally well comparer to this year all of them.

The PS4 will likely finish 2017 at 74+ million sales. It literally only has to sell another 12 million to beat out the PS3 and 360. It should do that well before the holidays 2018. Assuming it is the peak year (lets say 21-22 million for 2018), PS4 sales should be at 95-96 million by 2019, and could actually become the fastest home console to reach 100 million units.

Fantastic, now it's the undisputed number 1 in the 8th generation!!!

Why are we comparing a dedicated handheld to a console? They are different markets with different generations.

Both are 8 gen console, and in any case is a great milestone for PS4.

Congrats PS4, both sold very good.
