Have you guys seen the Digital Foundry video?

Mario Odyssey looks great but it surprisingly cuts a lot of corners to hit 60 fps. Things that would be less acceptable on 8th gen specs.

Ask yourself that question again after playing Ratchet and Clank on PS5.

We'll see, but a Mario gaming using PS4-tier or better hardware (more modern chip/feature set most likely) to me probably looks almost like a CG cartoon.

Pre-Rendered Mario CG Off A Work Station: We've been getting these since the days of Mario 64, where obviously the rendered Mario looked miles better than the in game stuff.

Real Time Mario Model Running Off current Switch:

Nintendo's art team is going to totally kill it when they get their hands on anything north of 1 Teraflop. Aside from the hair, the Mario model they use now is almost already on par with their CG renders.

Actually, the Switch chipset is the most modern out of all current consoles.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Switch already have 2 GOAT launch year .

And I don't agree you.

No disrepect to the Ratchet & Clank guys, but I think Nintendo will be able to make better looking games than them once they get their hands on similar hardware. Nintendo's art team is simply amazing.

Nintendo is able to do really amasing things with those 397 Gflops they have (to work with).
I agree with OP, Im curious to see what Nintendo could do with 1840 Gflops (ps4 level).

My guess would be nintendo with a PS4 level of performance could do Mario Oddessey in 4k.

So it would be nice for 4k Tv owners.

They didn't need to get any better looking than the GameCube games imo. I'd rather have weaker hardware and a cheaper console.

Strongly disagree. Looking back at GameCube graphics now, the console has aged very poorly. Nintendo doesn’t need huge leaps in hardware, but it’s still good that they are improving.

OT: It really depends on where Nintendo goes from, more specifically what they mean by “non-traditional games”. I think Nintendo has more or less found their comfort zone, but it would be nice to see something like a Twlight Princess-style  Zelda title with insanely detailed and realistic graphics.

Even with their current style, there’s always room for improvement; DF said SMO is a beautiful game, but even it has some technical drawbacks, like the blurred draw distance or use of 2D models from afar.

That’s definitely true. 60 FPS is demanding, but if games like Horizon or Uncharted used 2D models for objects more than 100 feet away, they’d be getting shat on by both reviewers and critics of PlayStation.

I actually had a similar feeling to you with Odyssey with 3D World. I thought that game was incredibly gorgeous, especially given the hardware. I'm looking forward to seeing if Odyssey is a step above that game.

It is; Odyssey looks significantly better than 3D World, particularly its lighting.

However, Galaxy still looks great today and is amazing to play

Amen. It's amazing how well that game has aged, given it was technically dated even when it released a decade ago. Still looks great.

A dunno if I'd call any of the cuts surprising; it's pretty standard stuff, a lot of the same tradeoffs used not only by other first party Switch games but also titles from other companies like Halo 5 or Destiny 2.

UC4 and Horizon make plenty of sacrifices of their own.

This is why I feel Nintendo in particular has much more room to grow than any other game company. They're using tech that's nowhere near as powerful as their competitors yet they're still punching above their weight in terms of visual fidelity. It's simply amazing. I can't wait to see what their development teams do when they do get a hold of even 1TF of power.

I was playing Odyssey at my folk's place and even my Mom stopped to look in awe of how amazing the Cascade Kingdom looked. She doesn't even play videogames. Odyssey is really an impressive visual feast. I can't wait to see what Nintendo does with Fire Emblem, any Mario RPG, and Pokemon.

Games on all consoles make sacrifices to achieve certain performance goals.

But Mario Odyssey is pushing it to another level than most other 60 fps titles. But people are less critical of Switch because its inferior specs.

Frankly, a game like Mario Odyssey shows better specs could really make that game a lot more polished. But its still an achievment as is.
