I actually had a similar feeling to you with Odyssey with 3D World. I thought that game was incredibly gorgeous, especially given the hardware. I'm looking forward to seeing if Odyssey is a step above that game.

It is; Odyssey looks significantly better than 3D World, particularly its lighting.

However, Galaxy still looks great today and is amazing to play

Amen. It's amazing how well that game has aged, given it was technically dated even when it released a decade ago. Still looks great.

Have you guys seen the Digital Foundry video?

Mario Odyssey looks great but it surprisingly cuts a lot of corners to hit 60 fps. Things that would be less acceptable on 8th gen specs.

A dunno if I'd call any of the cuts surprising; it's pretty standard stuff, a lot of the same tradeoffs used not only by other first party Switch games but also titles from other companies like Halo 5 or Destiny 2.

That’s definitely true. 60 FPS is demanding, but if games like Horizon or Uncharted used 2D models for objects more than 100 feet away, they’d be getting shat on by both reviewers and critics of PlayStation.

UC4 and Horizon make plenty of sacrifices of their own.

Games on all consoles make sacrifices to achieve certain performance goals.

But Mario Odyssey is pushing it to another level than most other 60 fps titles. But people are less critical of Switch because its inferior specs.

Frankly, a game like Mario Odyssey shows better specs could really make that game a lot more polished. But its still an achievment as is.
