Thats not to say I didn't enjoy it; it's a great shooter. But let's not delude ourselves about what it is.

Well, yes. Doom is the game that basically kicked off the 1st-person-shooter-genre. Yes, there were games before Doom, but they didn't have big impact. Doom did and many games came that did follow it's pattern. So yes, Doom is basically FPS: The Game.

Great to see Bethesda seems to be all in with Switch support. They've been probably my favorite non-Nintendo dev in the last decade or so (especially when it comes to their RPGs) so it's great to see pretty much my 2 favorite gaming entities to finally come together.

Can't wait to play portable Skyrim. May also pick up Wolfenstein though I'm unsure if I'll opt for the Switch version in this case, may just go for the quicker release + slicker graphics in this case on XB One. Never played Doom but might get it if I happen to see it at a discount price.

Even if he's not just talking about the Switch platform, how exactly is he wrong?

Doom is "FPS: The Game".

I mean, in recent years most shooters have been slower paced, cover based affairs in singleplayer with corridor levels, non interactive set pieces, tons of aggressive railroading and handholding.  Doom 2016 is crazy fast paced, outright discourages cover based shooting, unconcerned with a self important story telling, arms you with ludicrously powerful weapons, gives you a far more mobile character, has actual boss fights worth something, has sprawling levels that encourage exploration and even platforming aspects, and the game doesn't even have amo reloading.  Doom IS FPS the game...circa late 90s.  Which ironically makes it very different to what's on offer today.  The only similar game out there really is Overwatch but thats multiplayer only.

But again, he was talking about on Switch.

Doom plays completely differently from any shooter out now aside from Wolfenstein. Let's not reduce it to "FPS: The Game."

Let's see how Bethesda is talking a few months after Doom and Skyrim releases. The could be singing a completely different tune.
