Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo: We never expected the Switch to sell this much

Shortages? What shortages?

If you want a Switch but can't find one right now, just import it from germany. We have plenty! =D

No thanks, cheapest one is 325 euros, and you have shipping costs also if you are not from Germany.

Hole this article doesn't look very promising about resolving stock problems, especially this last part:

"And Nintendo wasn’t too optimistic about meeting demand in the near future: they plan to ship 10 million units this year, but said that “in reality there are 20 million people who actually want to buy one.”

Does this mean we can expect shortages to last until well into 2018? It’s going to take a while to manufacture (and ship) all those units to meet demand of an extra 20 million people who want one."

This honestly sounds like artifically stoking shortages to some degree. I think Nintendo does like being just below where the demand line is as it generates a lot of free buzz for them.

It doesn't take that long for a boat to travel from China in this day and age.

They have contradirary parts in article, first we have "thats easy to increase the production capacity of the factory", than "that it’s also difficult to get components because other companies like Apple (and Nintendo named Apple specifically) are competing for the same components", and at end that "Nintendo wasn’t too optimistic about meeting demand in the near future: they plan to ship 10 million units this year, but said that “in reality there are 20 million people who actually want to buy one”.

So I disagree, It sound that Nintendo increased production but that still isn't enough and that they have problems to further increase production because shortages of components, that is needed to meet demand.

Pro-Tip To Nintendo: Next time, try choosing 2-3 NAND flash vendors instead of thinking you're going to be given equal priority to fucking Apple.

Every smartphone, tablet in the world has NAND flash and they all manage without running into such headaches.

Well even apple had problems with stocking the iphone 7.

And samsung doesn't give a ghit cause they are the only hardware maker thats self sufficient.

Also yes ninty COULD increase production... if they raise the price to 350$ and give said 50 to the component makers.

More likely they were dumb enough to lock themselves into a component deal with the same supplier that makes for Apple specifically.

And of course Apple is going to get priority in that situation, they ship more in a month than Nintendo (or Sony) does in a year. Video game consoles are small potaotes.

There are hundreds of millions of phones/tablets/devices with NAND that aren't made by Apple or Samsung from dozens of other suppliers but it likely does Nintendo no good because they are locked in to whatever deal they signed.

They must have utterly pathetic expectations for it, then.

330 Euro's was the launch price in europe if I'm not mistaken.

But the shortages situation is dissapearing in europe at least. Amazon has stock in the UK.

Yes, but you usually have lower price for consoles than official ones, for istance official price for PS4 is 300 euros, but on lists like those you have lower prices than 300 euros.

Yup, Europe from start didn't had huge stock problems like US or especially Japan, and with bigger shipments situations is even better.

This sounds familiar.

That's what I immediately thought of as well. The thing is, the Ps4 didn't have much in the way of noteworthy exclusives at that point while the switch has gotten: possibly the best Zelda game ever, Mario Kart 8D, ARMS, Splatoon frigging japan slayer 2, and now Mario vs. Rabbids.

All of wich have proven to be stellar titles and are difinite system sellers. The console should be doing well.

It's like no one has any idea how their systems sell.

They never do, it is hard to predict. And a wrong prediction in either direction is bad for business. If you produce too few because your prediction is too low, you lose sales (not only the device itself, more importantly also on games). If you produce too much, you sit on unsold stock and have to pay for storage room.
