Forums - Nintendo - Rocket League targeted for 60 FPS, 720p on Switch

This should be a good indication of Switch power.
720p vs 1080p on PS4 & Xbox One but probably the same graphical fidelity.

Good for a handheld, dissapointing for a home console that came out in 2017.

But it's great to have such a game for mobile play.

Stuff like Rocket League unfortunately tend to make for fairly poor reference points, because their technical cap is significantly lower than what the PS4 and X1 can do. It's why even the standard X1 can run it at 1080p/60fps/Max~. Such comparisons tend to favour lower spec hardware, since less of its available power tends to go to waste. So it shows us what the Switch can do, but not what it can do relative to the PS4 and X1.

A good reference point would be a technically impressive title the PS4 and X1 have to make significant compromises on versus the game's technical cap (e.g. The Witcher 3), and from a developer willing to properly optimise for all platforms. The best example we have right now is DQH2, where the differences is 1080p vs 720p, 45-60fps vs 20-30fps, and graphical downgrades on the Switch. Unfortunately even DQH2 is a relatively lacking comparison, because it's not particularly well optimized on anything :p

Skyrim seems like a reference point.

Wonder how it will look on the big screen when docked, hopefully not too blurry. 1080p mode makes sense when on the go though.

720p it will pretty much look like every game from the X360/ps3 generation in terms of resolution but double their framerate on average.

Shouldn't be too offensive on the eyes at all, loving that the price of this will not be inflated for switch owners, most certainly Day 1 for me even while owning the game on the ps4.

Why not check me out on youtube and help me on the way to 2k subs over at www.youtube.com/stormcloudlive

720p 60fps > 1080p 30 fps all day every day. I'm a guy that can't get away from his 60 fps...

For a long time the Rocket League on PS4 anyways was 30 fps cap. When it was raised to 60fos within the last year.  The original Xbox One was stuck at 720p for many of its games as well until the S came out.

Fake news, Rocket League was always 60 fps on PS4, however it had some performance problems in 4v4 for some time.

Most of the people play 1v1, 2v2 and 3v3 though as 4v4 is chaotic and unranked only.

it wasn't always at a steady 60 especially on the original PS4. It was between 25-40ish fps until the somewhat recent update.

"Along with that, 60 FPS will be coming to both the base model and the Pro for all game modes (split-screen included!)."

Well 40-60, which of course is not ideal but it was in July 2015, PC and PS4 were first versions of the game.

I wouldn't call 40-60 in 3v3 a 30 fps game. 1v1 and 2v2 run better I think locked 60

yeah maybe I mistated that original statement lol. sorry

But still 60fps over 30fps everyday especially in highly active games. haha

I remember going from 25-30fps to 60+fps when I built my first pc back in 2010 or so...can never go back. Never should anyone say its impossible to see the difference because one definitely can see it.

Seems doable. Just have to set everything on low. Wonder if they tank to 30 in undocked.

I agree, but what does that have to do with what i said? :p My point was that games with technical caps lower than the capabilities of a member of a comparison usually make for poor reference points. Are you of the opinion Sonic pushes the PS4 past its limits?

Well, it looks better than Knack 1 & 2. Lot's of things are happening on screen at the same time as well. Definitely an AAA game, even on PS4. Obviously Switch would never be able to run a game like Anthem (at least not without heavy downgrades), but not all AAA games are outside the realm of possibilities.

The gap between home consoles and handhelds is smaller than ever (still a big gap, but not 3DS-PS4 big or even 3DS-PS3 big). Not just in technical capabilities but also in controls.

Still don't understand why that Dragonball Fighter Z game isn't on Switch, such a bummer.

Almost everything looks better than Knack :p Sonic Forces is a pretty game, but it's also very visually controlled. Even an undocked Switch is capable of more from the right developer.

Skyrim seems like a reference point.

Skyrim falls pretty far of the "technically impressive title" mark, but it could be useful for comparing specific things between the Switch and X1. Its biggest problem is that even if the remaster made use of the best assets possible (which is clearly doesn't), it's still built on almost decade old technology. I'd argue Zelda on the Switch is more technically impressive than Skyrim on the PS4.

God that video feels nostalgic. Good old times when everyone was just crashing into the ball because no one knew what to do.
