It seems to me PS4 Pro is hampered down by price. They wanted to hit $399 so that's what you got. A fairly modest upgrade to the CPU and GPU.

I could argue people buying premium hardware buy more games. I mean they're likely to be more avid gamers.

Scorpio is not underwhelming for a mid gen upgrade. It made a more significant boost to everything and that was the plan from the start. They just waited a year longer to release it. Better CPU, much better GPU, and the additional RAM is very significant for better textures, effects, and will help performance. The PS4 Pro seems like it was too focused on resolution while the additional RAM and custom CPU in X1X is gonna allow for a lot more.

I don't think BC will be an issue if they stick to the same architecture (x86).

Ah you meant it's underwhelming because of the price.

A year later and $100 more, they're about the same upgrade for value. We'll see whether the X1X is actually going to get a lot more. It will be the best version but I guess we'll need DF again to point out the differences.

I feel like the PS4 is a very well designed piece of hardware and it has just the right amount of power to do 1080p with high quality graphics. Its a nice piece of hardware for $250-$300.

The PS4 Pro played it too safe on price, it doesn't feel very premium. The GPU rarely hits 4K on modern games. The RAM was basically kept the same so we get the same textures with higher resolutions and games with unlocked frame rates are all over the place. I feel the Pro should have been $500 so it could be a better PREMIUM console. Those who feel $500 is too expensive, go buy a regular PS4.

I feel MS made the right decision if even X1X's price is high. Because the X1S is generally half the price and plays the same games fine.

Sony would better postpone PS5 until not earlier than Q4 2022, and, as an answer to Switch, make a PS4 Portable with PS4 base performances when docked, scaled down graphics and some unnecessary services halted or suspended when undocked and full PSV BC.
Or keep on its way without competing directly with Switch, but still releasing PS5 as late as possible. Recent consoles history tells us rushed consoles are often ill-fated. Switch is an exception because it jumps out of both home and portable distinction and precise generation placement.

PS4 Pro is hampered by having to be 100% hardware compatible with the base ps4. Plus it's a niche machine which is not a driving force to sell more software and must make its own money back in sales. That's the problem with incremental hardware, you can't simply put the best stuff of the time together and sell it at a slight loss expecting to make it back in software and subscriptions. A lot of people buying these upgrades wouldn't change their buying habits anyway. They might actually even buy less as they just spend the money on a hardware upgrade.

Scorpio is just as underwhelming for its price and 4 years later. It's $100 more than original xbox one without kinect, and equal or only slightly bigger difference than there was between XBox One and base ps4. And it's still 5 months before it even releases.

A clean break with new hardware is needed. Yet this time software BC should be easier unless the cpu clockspeeds of next gen are lower again. (Or they could emulate the base versions instead of pro/scorpio enhancements)

Can't disagree more with you. IMHO 500$ is too expensive especially if you do not have big exclusives. Let us wait and see the actual difference between PS4P and the X. TBH I do not see any significant advantage of the X. I think PS4P with the game line up it has is definitely a better buy and the gfx looks great anyways. gpu is twice as fast as the PS4 gpu and ram are 25% more faster for just more 100$ than PS4 I do not see that as a bad thing at all. The real problem is dev are not utilizing it properly as it is a mid gen upgrade. The X is an absolute waste IMHO unless the dev takes advantage of it which I do not see it happening.

As far as PS5 goes I think there is 3yrs for it. If they are targetting 500$ they must have games for it to justify. Even if it can play PS4 games at 4K and 60fps it will not be enough.

It kinda seems like we know what the PS5 will be: 10+ TFLOPs, 16GB of RAM, a better processor, ryzen vega all that jazz, you know a 4K bluray and anything else that seems right. But do you reckon they'll be some kind of unique selling point like the Switch? Or they'll just trust people will pick one up the better graphics, then the exclusives and so on.

Sony has the most groundbreaking technology in gaming since games went into 3D, and you're talking about portables being a unique selling point? Are you for real? Sony has been the most innovative company in gaming, not only with VR but also PS Now. Things that could legit be the next step of gaming in decades time.

I dont get why some people are triggered with better tech, the PS4 had the same criticism back in 2013, and yet it is the best selling console of the gen and on track to 100M. If all people want are prettier images, why are you against it?

Better tech=innovation in itself, never stopped and think about why 3rd parties are missing the Switch but always quick to blame them for not supporting Nintendo. Ambitious games like Beyond Good and Evil 2 are only now possible. To say all Sony has is system specs is flat out ignorant and arrogant at this point.

This still is nothing, you're including one offs or games with only one game in the series. If I did that, for Nintendo it'd be an insane list. And again, each is still considered a different series the goal never said anything about new IP, I said show IP that matched Nintendo's. And your total still doesn't exceed mine... Journey is an Idie game, But if you insist to include 1 and dones...

Devil World

Mach Rider

Shin Onigashima

Ice Climber

Duck Hunt...

And yeah, I could keep this going for about 100 more...barely scratched the surface. Nintendo got into the game 12 years ahead of Sony, they have to have something to show for it. I don't think we should do this here, one of us is bound to get banned. Send me your list on my Wall or something if you wanna keep going. I kinda guarantee I'll win. And Make sure the games are develooped by Sony or one of their teams, not indie, multiplat, etc.

Edit: And it's not always necessarily about quantity, it's quality too that makes the 1st party. Look at how high Nintendo's games are scored above Sony's first party. No contest there either

Challenge accepted. I will go deep into Sony's IPs if you wish, since you listed so many Nintendo IPs that I've never heard of before. Watch this space.

As for quality, notice how Sony is the console with the highest number of games in GotY awards? Like last year, Uncharted 4 was the big winner but The Last Guardian won a lot too. It's safe to say Sony makes games that are more applauded - like SM Galaxy 2 - highest rated game in 2010 and still only won a handful of GotY awards more than Heavy Rain while RDR and Mass Effect 2 cleaned up house.

In the other posts, still not enough to compete, it just isn't possible but good effort. Nintendo has more high rated 1st party titles than sony. GOTY awards, that's nice Nintendo is no stranger to them and they'll most likely get one this year. Even Bethesda says Nintendo raised the bar with Breath of the Wild, it's not often that other 3rd parties praise a 1st party so openly. Especially with their first Open world game but Nintendo has more games in that top 20 metacritic than any other 1st party... Again, Nintendo probably has about 300 different game releases and I don't wish to recount them. They're old, they have a lot of IP. The only games you really shouldn't know are Devil World, Mach Rider, and Takamaru as they're the oldest in the list.

Banking on VR and streaming for the future would go some way towards my ideal Sony console. If they force bundle VR and some new 8K super duper bluray player, it would be perfect.

No, we don't know what specs the PS5 will have and when it will launch (and the specs will highly depend from the launch year)

Also most hardware is boring on its own.

The hardware itself will become boring. There will be a point that a future generation won't look that much better for people to bother buying. Everything will rely on the actual games.

That's why Microsoft's Strategy could work well long term.

The strategy of not having any exclusives? Yea... that'll deffo work out.

Both Microsoft and Sony have different stances on this, but Sony games will forever be Sony games, and we know where they can be played.. dundundun EVERYWHERE WITH PS NOW *\o/*

When the PS5 does eventually come out I'm going to imagine it'll focus on power as its main draw, and depending upon how well VR does over the next few years, it could have PSVR as a primary focus of it, like a new and improved VR experience or something like that.

2020 is a fars away to even guess, who knows what new tech will be out.
