PS4 Pro is hampered by having to be 100% hardware compatible with the base ps4. Plus it's a niche machine which is not a driving force to sell more software and must make its own money back in sales. That's the problem with incremental hardware, you can't simply put the best stuff of the time together and sell it at a slight loss expecting to make it back in software and subscriptions. A lot of people buying these upgrades wouldn't change their buying habits anyway. They might actually even buy less as they just spend the money on a hardware upgrade.

Scorpio is just as underwhelming for its price and 4 years later. It's $100 more than original xbox one without kinect, and equal or only slightly bigger difference than there was between XBox One and base ps4. And it's still 5 months before it even releases.

A clean break with new hardware is needed. Yet this time software BC should be easier unless the cpu clockspeeds of next gen are lower again. (Or they could emulate the base versions instead of pro/scorpio enhancements)

It seems to me PS4 Pro is hampered down by price. They wanted to hit $399 so that's what you got. A fairly modest upgrade to the CPU and GPU.

I could argue people buying premium hardware buy more games. I mean they're likely to be more avid gamers.

Scorpio is not underwhelming for a mid gen upgrade. It made a more significant boost to everything and that was the plan from the start. They just waited a year longer to release it. Better CPU, much better GPU, and the additional RAM is very significant for better textures, effects, and will help performance. The PS4 Pro seems like it was too focused on resolution while the additional RAM and custom CPU in X1X is gonna allow for a lot more.

I don't think BC will be an issue if they stick to the same architecture (x86).

Can't disagree more with you. IMHO 500$ is too expensive especially if you do not have big exclusives. Let us wait and see the actual difference between PS4P and the X. TBH I do not see any significant advantage of the X. I think PS4P with the game line up it has is definitely a better buy and the gfx looks great anyways. gpu is twice as fast as the PS4 gpu and ram are 25% more faster for just more 100$ than PS4 I do not see that as a bad thing at all. The real problem is dev are not utilizing it properly as it is a mid gen upgrade. The X is an absolute waste IMHO unless the dev takes advantage of it which I do not see it happening.

As far as PS5 goes I think there is 3yrs for it. If they are targetting 500$ they must have games for it to justify. Even if it can play PS4 games at 4K and 60fps it will not be enough.
