Good pick of a game. I really loved that one back in the day : D

You could play it today on the Wii VC and it still holds up :P

Yeah, I've been thinking about getting it for a long time, but hold back since I still have it on N64. I may give in one day, haha.

N64, as that was the only console I owned that gen. I was just never pulled in to the PS1, and I honestly felt the PS1 had weird visuals that made games look weird, like everything moved in such a fuzzy way.

In a jittery way, yeah. I admit though I find that aspect of the PS1 endearing. There was a sort of humility to it, the developers were doing what they could with what the hardware could give them.

That and the PS1 had the best console startup ever.

Still, I gotta give it to the N64 since I played more of that and it had the GotG: SM64.

Yeah, I do recall that iconic start up screen.

But yeah, I too had a lot of fun and good memories with the N64, Mario 64 being one of a few mind blows I've had in gaming in general. :D

i could say the same thing about the N64 how it makes everything blury

I suppose you could say that, but I never really thought of that when I played N64, and I've replayed some games from time to time as well. The few times I've seen PS1 games, that almost always sticks out to me.

What I find so interesting about this matchup is that the two are so different, with each beating the other in different areas.

For example, CDs meant more space for games, but cartridges meant basically no load times.

Even their graphical approaches were starkly different, with the N64 going for a heavily filtered look employing high-end-for-the-time techniques like AA, trilinear filtering, and perspective correct texturing, while the PS1 had a sharper but more pixelated and jittery look.

I kind of like that they're so different though, as each is charming in its own distinct way.

Glad to know I'm not the only one who thought that when seeing PS1 games in motion.

PS1 by an absolute mile. My favourite console. Had such incredible 3rd party support.

It's due to limitations in the hardware; PS1 used affine texture mapping, which produces distortions when viewed at an angle.

N64, being newer hardware, supported perspective correct texturing, so that surfaces didn't warp and jitter the way they did on PS1.

Correct.
Developers ended up trying to cut up the geometry into smaller pieces so that the perspective correction error wasn't as severe.
It's main issue is because the PS1 didn't have enough precision on the vertices as it used fixed point math and not floating point, which meant there was more rounding errors.
PC also exhibited a similar issue when using software rendering, developers would reduce precision for more performance, but once Voodoo burst onto the scene that mostly changed.

The Nintendo 64 also had Anti-Aliasing, bilinear texture filtering and T&L and so much more. It was an effects powerhouse compared to the PS1, no other console could match it that generation. And it even gave the PC a run for it's money in some aspects.

I am gonna go with N64. Load times were so very bad on the PS1. Also at that time I was late elementary/ jr high and could not afford to buy a ton of games (and my parents did not), to I largely was not affected by the lesser quantity of games the N64 had compare to PS1. Gold

End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)

Wii- 72 million   3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases

360- 37 million   Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak

PS3- 29 million  Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut

Probably PS1 since I can play most of the N64 games quite easily on the 3DS/WiiU so would be nice to try out other games

[3DS] Winter Playtimes [Wii U]

If N64 had used CD-ROM I think it would have a good shot at having the greatest library ever

Super Mario 64, Zelda: OoT, GoldenEye, Zelda: MM, Final Fantasy VII-IX, Metal Gear Solid, Dragon Quest VII, Resident Evil 1-3, Xenogears, Banjo-Kazooie, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, Beetle Adventure Racing, F-Zero X, Star Fox 64, Blast Corps, Silent Hill, Final Fantasy Tactics, Perfect Dark, Turok 2, Wave Race 64, Parasite Eve, Conker's BFD, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Chrono Cross, Street Fighter Alpha 2/3, Mortal Kombat 4, Ridge Racer, Tekken 2/3, Suikoden II, Snowball Kids, Pokemon Snap, Excite Bike 64, 1080 Snowboarding, Banjo-Tooie, Starcraft 64, Star Wars Episode I Racer, Tobal No.1, Bushido Blade, Mario Kart 64, Paper Mario, etc.

Like shit, think about it.

PS1 for me. It has many of my favourite games of all time, and in general has a much deeper software lineup. The N64 is a great console as well, but it simply doesn't have as many great games as the PS1.

I really dislike PSOne tbh. N64 wins by miles imho. I had both when I was a kid, and I barely touched the PSOne. I must say that it has games that I enjoyed (FFVII-IX, Metal Gear Solid and Resident Evil 1-3). But those were the only games I really liked.

Same here. Even though I had both I still enjoyed the N64 much more.
