This might be a dumb question but, how do you track digital in the first place? The only thing you can really do is estimate based on past ratios for genres and other games in series right?

Work together with console manufacturers and third party publishers in hopes that they share digital sales data.

Another option is to regularly check the bestseller lists of digital stores and make estimates based on the rankings. The problem here is the lack of accuracy when there are no reference points.

I'd rather have possibly inaccurate data than none at all though, wouldn't you? It's not like VGChartz is known for accuracy as it is XD

Maybe just add on 10%...? But even just updating major games to their offical numbers when ever they're announced would be something I'd settle for.

The problem there is that you can't give region-by-region breakdown unless the publisher states it, which is unlikely :(

It would be fantastic if they can.

I'd love to know the digital sales on some virtual console titles. I want to know how many copies of older Zelda and Mario games (etc) have sold altogether now.

Those numbers are hard to track and often inconclusive since not every digital store will give insiders data on that. For now on console add 20% of the physical sales and the total software sales are pretty accurate.

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar

Problem with that is that not only does the digital percentage vary by region but the base percentage is always changing. For example, how would you work out the sales for GTA V when it's been released on 5 platforms and has been selling in great numbers from 2013-2017, in addition to selling well in many regions? Adding 20% just doesn't cut it.

I doubt it, retail sales don't get regularly updates. Adding digital sales would just be too much work I guess.

It's barely a tracking site anymore. The look of the place has not been updated in 9 years. At this point just be happy the forums are up.

Working together with console manufacturers might work, but if VGChartz would ask third party publishers, we would need almost every single publisher to agree in order to make a somewhat correct list.

That sentence was only there for the sake of comprehensiveness. I do not believe that VGC has enough credibility and respect to get console manufacturers and/or third party publishers on board. Even NPD could only convince some to share their digital sales data.

It's indeed very unlikely that we can get digital sales that way, and I guess it's nearly impossible to get digital sales since I see no other way.
