Forums - Gaming Discussion - Fewer Games is Never a Good Thing

Tagged games:

Yeh. Fewer games are never a good thing (technically not, as too many games can destroy your market when nobody makes money anymore). But in the end, it's only about balance. Are there any games coming that are there because of, well, the same reasons the games in the OP are skipping Switch.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

I will counter that with it doesn't matter how many games a console has if those games don't appeal to the audience that is interested in that device.

While Switch does have a low amount of launch day titles, it looks like it will have a steady stream of Japanese, indie & kid/family titles releasing throughout the year and guess what? These are the types of games that have had success on Nintendo platforms in the last dozen or so years (DS/Wii/3DS/Wii U).

Releasing games with little chance of success on a platform doesn't help anybody, it upsets the developer/publisher when the game fails causing them to lose interest in supporting the platform at all which in tern hurts the platform holder because they now have less support.

Instead of EA supporting Switch with a game like Titanfall or Battlefield, they would be better off supporting it with Plants vs Zombies or Unravel, games that have potential to sell to the 3DS/Wii U audience moving to Switch.

And what happens if a person who likes Mario Kart or Splatoon has friends over and would like to play say ... Madden or FIFA or Battlefield or NHL?

Sony/MS appeal to multiple audience bases, Nintendo is stuck catering to one smaller one. You either have to really, really like colorful/cartoony mascot games in a narrow genre set or basically Nintendo doesn't really have much appeal to you, which is problematic.

Indie games are never going to sell a platform either IMO. Every system has those same indie games and their appeal on a per title basis is small.

Nintendo wasn't always like this, infact they weren't for a good 12-15 years.

It's probably too late now though anyway, Nintendo has kinda corned themselves into a smaller part of the market so it is what it is. Quite honestly if the NES and SNES followed the philosophy Nintendo of today has they would've been beaten both times by Sega. Doesn't matter how great Super Mario was.

While I agree, it all comes down to the quality and need for the games. If you just get a bunch of ports from a year or two ago, it doesn't matter if you have 30 of them at launch. If they aren't quality, people aren't going to buy it.

Titanfall 2 hasn't been doing to well to begin with, so why would they spend money making a Switch port and then risking near guaranteed shit sales on a device that people already claim is for diehard Nintendo fans and children? It just doesn't make sense on any level for them to even port it to Switch.

In the case of the Wii U it had a ton of launch games and that didn't mean anything for the console. It's about striking a balance.

Well, you're not wrong. But that didn't help Wii U at launch. Fewer games is bad. But more games isn't inherently good. More new games is what a system needs. That's why BotW is good as a multiplat. It's a new game, not a 3 year old port of a game nobody cares about anymore.

Well, two of the most notable third-party games coming to the Switch are a port of a 6 year old game and a port of a 26 year old game.

Read my last sentence again. The best system seller and most popular 8th gen game is also a port. People actually care about GTA V and Skyrim to this day. I don't know why, but that's the reason those do matter. I wanna say Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will be another case of that happening, but we can't tell until April.

Also, what's the 26 year old port?

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

It depends on the genre the game falls in. I would much rather have companies make games in genres the public like for the most part (my tastes align with those games). Racing,TPS,FPS,WRPG,MMO,Sports, ect. Why make a game and spend a lot of money and time if the game's genre is something most people don't care about? For example, Microsoft shouldn't spend time and money with a JRPG like Scalebound that has been proven time and time again JRPGS don't sell that well outside of FF/Soul series (even though FF15/Soul series is cater to the western audience). Instead spend the money and time on Fable which has proven to be a successful franchise and a game that cater to a rather big audience. I really hope Fable 4 is announced. They have all the assets for god sakes from previous fables and fable legends.

But it's Nintendo, less is always better. Less hardware, less sales, less 3rd parties, less price cuts, less supplies. Nintendo revels in those things.

Or so I've been told.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

You are wrong because in order to get Titanfall 2 they'd need a powerful console. One that can't be a hybrid console. Nintendo's future is in fusing their home console and handheld departments. AAA third-party support needs to be sacrificed for that, but it will be worth it if the Switch gets the combined support of the Wii U and 3DS plus more.

Why would anyone buy another console that is extremely similar to the PS4 and XBONE? Why would the people who are interested in AAA third party games all of a sudden make the switch to this new console? Not going to happen. Maybe if one of them leaves the console market...

Nintendo doesn't need Titanfall 2. They need to seek even closer ties with Western indie developers. Indie games are becoming more and more important and ambitious.

The Switch will get the following important indie games this year:

  • The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ (it will release on the Switch before the PS4 and XBONE if I'm not mistaken)
  • Fast RMX (a futuristic racing game with over 30 tracks at 1080p and 60fps)
  • Minecraft: Story Mode
  • Minecraft: Switch Edition
  • No More Heroes 3 (Suda said he's going to work together with indie developers)
  • Oceaanhorn
  • Redout
  • Rime
  • Shovel Knight (Switch will get the last DLC campaign before the other consoles)
  • Snipperclips
  • Sonic Mania
  • Stardew Valley
  • Steamworld Project 2017
  • Syberia 3
  • Yooka-Laylee

Now Nintendo needs to do the sensible thing and contact who ever made Undertale for a port to the Switch, maybe with timed exclusivity or something.

GameCube (for those of you too young to remember, GameCube was a system with a built-in handle so you could easily throw it in the trash).

You actually squezeed a laugh out of me with this line.

You are right. Most nintendo zealots and myself are trying to find  a way to justify the buy of Nintendo switch (even tho ill be waiting for a price drop) behind ideas like "its because nintendo's software quality" or "you cannot find Mario/Zelda/Metroid elsewhere". But its clear for me that Fewer games is never a good thing... ever.
