I think Holidays will be a better test

Using bolded font doesn't make your comparisons any better. You didn't even acknowledge my point. For a Wii U to Switch comparison to make sense, Wii U and Switch would have to be very similar. They are not. |
They are not similar but Switch faces a stronger competition with an established PS4 and Xbox One system in the market. The Wii U only had to face PS3 and 360 at that time. That's why it's important to do better than the Wii U sales in its fall season even though the Switch has released in a later date than Wii U.
I don't think Switch is anywhere close to a Wii/DS type situation, but it's probably not nearly as bad as what the Wii U/GameCube were.
Truth will likely end up somewhere in the middle, I'd say probably a bit below the 3DS, but still relatively profitable.
It's gonna be kind of a "boring" system for sales debaters because it's going to be neither a huge blockbuster but it's not going to sell bad enough to be termed a failure either. Just gonna be kinda in the middle.
Launch sales will probably be brisk because of limited supply and Zelda fanatics snatching up initial units, then you'll likely see a lull after the early adopters get theirs, but then an evening out as fall rolls around.

What? The Wii U got in the position that it found itself between low-end options (PS3, 360) and upcoming high-end options (PS4, XB1) for the same kind of games. Switch is positioned as neither low-end or high-end, because it's a console that stands on its own. Another crucial difference is that Wii U saw its software pipeline being shattered to pieces because third parties either didn't show up or quickly abandoned the console, and Nintendo themselves also had to support the 3DS on the side. Switch is going to get all of Nintendo's games, so even if third parties are hesitant, Nintendo's own output ensures that a price drop can be effective. |
I did factor the price drop in earlier in the OP saying it is needed if it sales less than 4 million in 7 months. But if there is no price drop, I have a suspicion Nintendo will have a standalone Switch tablet for a cheaper price out soon.
The Switch doesnt really stand on it own though when the consumer can either buy a $300 new Switch or $270 PS4 slim with a pack in game. Nintendo needs to prove its new console can perform well even in launch againtst it competitors in their middle of their lifetime because the competitors can afford price cuts more quickly than the new Switch and their libraries will expand even further. This is the problem of releasing a new console in the middle of their competitors' life span and Nintendo is aware of this.

Yeah that price is not good, they are going to have headaches with that price after the launch honeymoon wears off.
It's coming into a much tougher market than many Nintendo systems too that's a problem. Not only do you have plentiful cheap tablets that are $200 or less and the overall impact of smartphones, you have PS4 and XB1 both basically right in their prime and easy to find at a lower price.
At least Wii U got kind of a nice "soft" launch window where the PS3/360 were very old and the PS4/XB1 were still a year off.

So you still think that bolded font makes your points better. It doesn't work like that. You can't take a PS4 and play it anywhere you want, so the Switch definitely offers things of value that neither Sony or Microsoft can match. |
At $360 with a game though ... I don't know, this seems priced out of the usual DS/3DS/GBA crowd and kids crowd. At that price I can see why Nintendo is keen to have it labelled a "console", because its very expensive for a portable.

Its not a niche franchise. Its just not as popular as some of Nintendos other franchises. |
Problem is Nintendo doesn't have the balls to actually change the metroid series enough to appeal more hardcore gamers. If metroid would have more insane boss battles a more adult artstyle and a story that's more realistic it would attract more hardcore gamers. Metroid prime corruption was a step towards reaching that audience. Than some nutjob at Nintendo thought it would be a good idea to release other M and disregard the groundwork corruption has led for the future of the series. On the other hand they rebooted star fox for some reason so I wouldn't see why a metroid is impossible, just not the metroid core gamers are waiting for.

How exactly does a consumer get portable gaming and Joycon features from the PS4?

That's a two way street since Sony and Microsoft get a huge ammount of high profile third party games the Switch simply will not get. Which as far as I am concerned are quite valuable for building a library. At this moment Sony offers a system with a good library, decent specs and a great future perspective for a sharp price. You might not be able to take the PS4 everywhere you want, but it makes up for it in other areas. Like it or not but the Switch has to compete with the rise of tablet and mobile gaming on one side (the handheld side) and the PS4 and Xone on the other side. That's some tough competition especially considering Sony is line-up for the PS4 in 2017 and 2018.
