I think we can agree but...

I can't think of one game developer that would ever wish nintendo becoming a 3rd party developer.

Why you may ask...

Well besides that fact that I know a few old and new people at these big devs (activision, oculus, valve, rockstar, etc)...Game developers enjoy a seperate nintendo environment.  Many game develops agree that nintendo is a go to for family/ kids game and lite coded games. If you want to target that audience boom you are there. But if they were to start to hit the PS4 or XB1 with next generation Marios, Zeldas, Donkey kong and Smash brothers...well crap you are talking sales in the tens of millions. It will add a whole new dimension of competition to the larger console market and game devs like that market where it is now. Mixing it all will just change how they will have to market their current games for that release period. Sure they have to do that now but think about this month.  You dont want to release horizon zero dawn on PS4 when an prettier copy zelda breath of the wild is being released on PS4 as well. Don't be misled Nintedo is a very capable game developing company if they were to become competitive it would cut a lot of profit margins for a lot of other companies.:)

That being said....yes nintedo should go 3rd party.

Anyone wanting nintendo to go third party aren't thinking it through.

I'm glad enough we have three companies running the console business (well, running the majority). The last thing we need is for sony, microsoft, or Nintendo to go third party. It'd be terrible. We'd be stuck with watered down PC's instead of cool ideas by nintendo. I'd rather have a portable console, even if it means the games aren't as good looking.

Nope. As far as I see it. Nintendo is the only company innovating.

Really? How so? Playstation consoles have allowed the handheld to be used as a controller and to be used for playing games directly off of the PS3 and PS4 long before the WiiU or  the switch.  Playstation was the first to come out with motion based games with the eye-toy even though they faild miserably at marketing, something Nintendo is great at. The last time Nintendo did anything significant was the Wii but really the handheld market is where they have dominated. Nintendo hardware has always been sub par in comparison to other consoles, third party game support on the consoles is dramatically in the other consoles favor and game sales show a huge difference between first and third party sales for Nintendo consoles. Nintendo is missing out on over 100 million sales by not releasing its games on other consoles.

If Nintendo went third party, they'd lower the quality of their games similar to how other developers do it. It would be a gaming apocalypse.

Not to mention, I'd rather Sony or Microsoft went third party. They don't make any games I care about.

No. It was a horrible idea when people posed it in 1997. It's a horrible idea now in 2017. And it'll be a horrible idea when people inevitably pose it in 2037..

I don't get, why is it always Nintendo that should go third party, and no one ever seems to pose it for Sony and MS, who have a much harder time profiting in the games industry (especially MS),  and who's games already more closely resemble many third party games?

Nintendo is the soul of gaming. Take them out of the equation and what little remains of the soul of gaming is essentially completely gone, at least for me.

And besides, do people REALLY want to see a gaming industry with a Coke vs Pepsi duopoly situation? Especially when both competitors are basically 80% the same?

Really? How so?

Innovation isn't just about doing something first. It is largely about bringing it to a mass market and tapping into the potential of the idea. Nintendo seems to be the only console maker who is willing to put 100% into an idea. Including a Wii Remote or a Wii U Gamepad or even the 3D screen with the 3DS with every console establishes a userbase more than a peripheral device which allows developers to use the technology without destroying the player base.

This sets up a platform which encourages innovation and encourages different gameplay experiences and different ways of creating games. While 3rd parties don't always tap into this potential (although there are certainly examples of them doing so such as Red Steel 2), the uniqueness of the consoles allows Nintendo to flex its creative muscles in a way which wouldn't be possible on other consoles.

I think it is very fair to say that in terms of input devices, Nintendo is the only console maker willing to take risks and innovate.

I never thought Nintendo would go 3rd party to start with, though, they are releasing games on smart devices now so..... then again, people don't count computing devices for whatever reason so /shrug

Who would buy other games when you can get Nintendo games in Sony or MS systems? It benefits no one.

Zelda at 60fps?
Meh who cares about 60fps

Why does this argument keep coming up for Nintendo but ignored for Sony/Microsoft when historically Nintendo has been far more profitable as a hardware provider?
