The Switch has many weaknesses, but I don't see it selling worse than the Wii U. Having a Zelda game at launch will be huge! Plus a big 3D Mario game will be out before the end of the year as well. I wouldn't be surprised if the Switch only hits GameCube levels of sales, but it would be quite difficult for it to sell less than the Wii U.
Lifetime Sales Predictions
Switch: 161 million (was 73 million, then 96 million, then 113 million, then 125 million, then 144 million, then 151 million, then 156 million)
PS5: 122 million (was 105 million, then 115 million) Xbox Series X/S: 38 million (was 60 million, then 67 million, then 57 million. then 48 million. then 40 million)
Switch 2: 120 million (was 116 million)
PS4: 120 mil (was 100 then 130 million, then 122 million) Xbox One: 51 mil (was 50 then 55 mil)
3DS: 75.5 mil (was 73, then 77 million)

Couple that with far more positive reception from consumers and developers, and strong titles being showcased. |
Not seeing a more positive reception from consumers, and the developer support looked more anemic than Wii U launch.

@op, no it will not sell less than Wii U are you dumb? Its freaking 300 for a portable console. Last time i checked 3ds was still 200 and sells like hot cakes. This is a lot more powerful than that. Home consoles and portable is not even the same market so they will get sales that would never go towards a PS4 or a Xbox. That said, i do not believe it will be the biggest console on the market, but it will do fine and will be around for years to come.
Edit. why is everybody bashing the price? 300 is hell a lot better than i thought it would cost, hell a IPAD is more... Now i do know that this wont have apps since nintendo is daft, but if it would allow android or IOS it would be the most popular tablet in the world like a year from now.
It won't sell that bad, that's impossible. The Wii U wasn't utter total flop and Nintendo know it. I think the Switch will sell like the XboxOne, it will have massive sale at the start because it's got a loyal fan base so the start will look promising but it will slow down a lot after around 2months.
A lot of people think Nintendo consoles will sell like crazy and are popular because of the Wii but the Wii was marketed very clever with all its Excercise commercials and family's playing together. People who'd normally not even go near a console bought the Wii.

Nah, it's a handheld and 3DS successor too, I expect it to outsell Wii U in Japan alone. If it fails they will do a rescue operation a la 3DS.

1. No, but it'll still sell like shit.
This is 100% the case if they don't pull a 3DS and drop the price on almost everything within the first year. They're launching full price regardless, because their diehard fans will be there.
30m - 40m
2. No, it'll sell very well
Again if they do drop the price within the first year like the 3DS gamers will get over this awful reveal and buy the system. The system and the games look great so that's not the problem, it's EVERYTHING else.
60m
Nah. It'll disappoint for sure and will be another major decline in total Nintendo userbase, but as low as WiiU would be a complete disaster. To pit a number on it, maybe 35-40m, with half in Japan.
This is assuming the Switch will be the only line of hardware next generation. If there's going to be the traditional two afterall, then it'll do less obviously. Say maybe 20m.

The Switch is not operating as a 3DS but a hybrid, which will most likely fashion itself to play console games on the go. It wont have the 3DS appeal nor the games. The Switch is a great console, but the launch price, the accessory prices and more troubling info got in the way of what was a pretty solid piece of tech. Nintendo has to nail their support from third party or else. |
I was saying the Switch will receive at minimum the support the 3ds (And Wii U) received because Nintendo's console and handheld software divisions are now streamlined, and together working on one system. Also, I'm sure Nintendo will want to release a 2D Zelda, Mario, etc. because those types of games have appeal all on their own. I get that Smash, Kart and most games will get the 3D high resolution approach from now on, but the line is being blurred because we have the option to use it as a handheld and it can receive games that look like they belong on handheld, but like I said the lines are too blurred, which is why it should be called a hybrid as you stated.
I feel if third party support can be achieved through creative releases (i.e. Rabbids-Mario crossover, titles that appeal more to Nintendo's userbase), then that would be enough to carry the switch. I personally believe the streamlining/having all Nintendo releases on one console will ensure the Switch succeeds. I thought the launch price was fine, considering it's only availlable as one sku. The joycons have so much tech in them so I'm not surprised at their price, but the dock is another story.
