It's not that guns are holding video games back. It's more that video games need to find a way to diversify. Similar to how there are more than just violent movies, books or TV shows. We've had a number of video games in the recent past where violence is often not the answer, or even an option, but there's still room for much more. I like games where I can use weapons to destroy enemies in a variety of creative ways, but I enjoy games like To the Moon or Journey just as much.

Guns are put into games that don't need them. Watch Dogs 2 could have been a stealth game without any guns and would have been as good but it has guns so that it can sell enough to make a profit. Uncharted has guns and shooting and as I pointed out it feels out of place with the narrative and characterisation of Drake.

Also games like Dishonored have guns where they don't need them. I could add more games to this but you get the point.

You also see so many FPS games because of the popularity of guns in video games. This gen there isn't a single new AAA hack and slash game on PS4 and there are so many shooters. That is because shooters sell.

Well then buy non shooters. The WiiU is full of them.

I'm not interested in most Nintendo games and I wouldn't buy a $400 console just to play two games that I'm interested on it and especially as that console has stopped production so no future support. The games would also cost me another $80 each. Too expensive.

Besides why are there not more games on PS4, XB1 and PC that don't have shooting? That is where the industry is going.

There are many indie games that dont have guns. You complain about too many games have guns, yet you dont want to buy games without guns in it. The WiiU is full of them and you only want two games of the entire library? Maybe gamers like you are part of the problem?

There are tons of games on PS4, XB1 and PC that don't have shooting. You just ignore them because "indies don't count", "AA games don't count", "sport games don't count", "racing games don't count", "VR games don't count", "games that don't sell a million copies count", "visual novels don't count", games like "Life is Strange" or "Game of Thrones" don't count, "point&click adventures don't count", "Nintendo games don't count"...

Are you complaining, for the fact, that the majority loves to kill, to complete a goal. VS doing it another way. You really can't change that. A weapon is the easiest way to interact with something. You can't force peoples tastes. But, there are games that don't have weapons. You can play them. But, they aren't going to replace most of the genres. Guns trigger action and drama very easily. I'm not saying a talking game won't be successful. Or we wouldn't have shows/games etc. like Star Trek. But weapons are more sought after. Because most people won't wield or use one, in real life. Plus, these games let us preform actions that are wrong. Without consequences. That is really the drive of why GTA sells. You can murder or have sex with a prositute, with ease.

I like AAA games. Most indie games aren't worth the price according to me. They are simple and not very immersive. There are some indie games like Rocket League that are but most of them are notr good.

I want four games on Wii U forgot two of them when writing the post. Still very few games and it won't get any more of them. That is because I don't like platformers which is most of what Nintendo makes. I appreciate them but the only platformer game I like is Ratchet and Clank released this year.

I'm not saying I dislike sjooters. i like them. But I want more variety. I buy many games without guns on PS4 and PC. But my options are limited and I would like to see more AAA hack and slash, racing and 3D fighting games and more JRPG's with real time combat like FFXV.

I never said indies don't count but here I'm only discussing AAA games which are the reason I'm a gamer. Neither did I say that racing and sports games don't count, and sports games are another problem that I have, but I enjoy racing games a lot. Forza Horizon 3 is one of the best games this year but its the only AAA rcaing game I can think of that came out this year. See I don't have many choices in racing games.

You missed the entire point of what I am saying. If more hack and slash and racing game sold over ten million units we would have seen many more of those games. But we don't because they don't sell well. Even Forza Horizon 3 with a strong brand and incredible reviews hasn't sold that well. There is not a single new AAA hack and slash game on PS4. There were many on PS3. Its because they don't sell and shooting games can easily sell over a million even if they aren't that good because they appeal to a large demographic.

As for games like Telltale games I prefer to have fun gameplay in games. I would prefer to have a same shooters as we get over having more of these games. And they are another recent trend I don't like in games.

As for Nintendo games look at my reply above to KLXVER. I don't have a problem with Nintendo but they themsleves have made Wii U inaccessible to me.

I'm playing Brothers on Xbox One.

Stupid article.

Completely ignores that gamers choose with their wallets and that developers make what will sell.

The day games like the witness, bad neighbour or firewatch pushes the kinda numbers COD or GTA push, then we will see a lot more of those kinda games.

The medium isn't held back by guns or violence... it's just that those are the kimda games gamers seem to be more interested in.

yes, melee fighting has combos and blocking for example, a lot more diversity

True, gamers are holding the medium back.

It's the same in movies and tv anyway. Generic action movies sell most. Most people like to have a break from 'thinking' while watching a movie or playing a game. Simply react, be in the moment, whack-a-mole style gameplay works. There are plenty alternatives, just with smaller audiences and budgets. If you like to think about what you're doing while playing a game, you're in the minority. Familiarity sells, grinding works, playing the same game/matches over and over again is very common.

I like both, yet 'getting in the zone' with racing, shmups or pinball wins out over story/decision based games. I'm not too fond of modern gun wielding games, not because of reservations about shooting people in video games, more because of the cutscenese being so disconnected of what you do. Ludonaritive dissonance is indeed annoying. But the guns aren't the problem, the stories are. Bring back the humor and over the top nonsense from Duke Nukem 3D. Wolfenstein the new order was more enjoyable than Uncharted 4 for that reason.
