I have never heard about it. Not much of a crash. The Atari 2600 was released in 1977. Seems like manufacturers flood the market with pong consoles that affected a few cartridge based consoles. |
In 1977 the market ran into a crash because gaming at the time was essentially a load of different machines all playing pong even the earlier second gen consoles, consumers just stopped buying consoles even the 2600 wasn't leaving shelves, what saved gaming in the late 70s was when Atari licensed Space Invaders in 1978 averting disaster, not only because it was a good game that was different but it triggered a new era as the new wave of second gen consoles had a programable nature that allowed people to code games in their own bedrooms and such leading to the creation of many companies, games and so on.
The result of 1977 was that the were many unsold pong consoles and Atari became the force in gaming, the reason many people aren't as aware of this crash is because it never fully stopped gaming as an industry and lasted only about a year unlike the 1983 crash which even though it lasted 2 years it had a big build up to it beforehand and during the 2 years of the crash gaming was dead in the west.
