For all indeeds NX is Nintendos 9th Gen console and the first True 9th gen console too. Its not an upgrade like the PS4Pro and XB1S.

You know that it also doesn't start or stop when Nintendo says so right? What happens if Microsoft and Sony decide not to launch their next gen devices until into 2020? It will have been roughly the same amount of time between PS4 and NX, so does that make it Gen 10, or more Gen 9 despite the additional leap forward and time difference?

 

Besides all of that, there's actually precedent for Nintendo doing something like this. Wii U is a flop, NX is their mulligan. Sound familiar? Let me change those proper nouns: "Virtual Boy is a flop, Gameboy Color is their mulligan." Both the Virtual Boy and Gameboy Color are classified as Gen 5 platforms, with Virtual Boy launching three years prior to the Gameboy Color. The Virtual Boy was a commercial failure and embarrassment (much like the Wii U has been), while the Gameboy Color redeemed the platform (much like the NX will, if things go as planned).
