Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo Will Continue Focusing on Consoles, Now Recognize That Mobile is More Popular

While the company is certainly showing a lot of support for mobile at present, they've certainly not abandoned their own consoles, as they've made clear from the very start. Miyamoto commented on this as well, noting that work on consoles will continue as it always has, but also that something has changed for Nintendo: their platforms are no longer "the most popular in the world." That honor, they've realized, now goes to mobile devices, which is what led them to start embracing this new form of gaming.

" I love hardware platforms and Nintendo will continue to make our own hardware but what’s changed is that there was a time when Nintendo’s platforms were the most popular in the world and now we see smartphones are the most popular device in the world. So we’ll keep looking for opportunities in smartphones and when we see them we’ll design something specifically for that hardware."

It's definitely great that they are taking mobile more seriously, some might even say that it should have happened earlier. I would argue that, at least on the console side of things, Nintendo platforms stopped being the most popular since the 5th gen. The 7th gen was the exception, of course.

Well, you do need to get on with times. And unfortunely, they are not the most popular hardware since the 4th/5th generation with the exception of the Wii as you said. But if they keep doing what they are doing, that being their main business continues to be consoles and mobile are a marketing tool/money maker, im fine with it.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

Wait, they only now see that?

Wii and Nintendo DS were the most popular gaming devices like 6 years ago. That's not gen 5. Yeah, consoles are on the way out and I'm glad the acknowledge that. Mobile and PC are the future (at least until something better comes out), so I hope they have good plans and big ideas for that transition because Nintendo has a great number of good IPs, I don't want to see them going down.

If they went full 3rd party they would probably be makeing 10 times the amounts of cash they are now.

Still... would be weird to not have any nintendo hardware out there.
Ive had all their consoles all the way back to the nes.

Not long until they realize that PS4 is the most popular home console and will start developing for it.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Of course they will say that with the NX launch being not that far away anymore. Otherwise they would scare off all the fans.

Well, both comments seem like obvious ones that they are just stating late. Well, at least they're starting to make some good moves now. All that's left is to ensure a great NX start.

Some dodgy logic there. If smartphones are applicable to be 'most popular in the world' then that means that Nintendo's consoles have never had that status since PCs have always been more popular than them...

Do you remember how much PCs cost back in the 90s?  It was about 2 grand for a new PC which became outdated within a couple years (if not less).  Adjusted for inflation the cost probably was around 4-5 thousand.  Just because more PC might have sold doesn't mean a majority of those PCs were used for gaming.  PC gamers were designated as dorks back then and the stigma still sticks today.
