Damn, that guy is a visionair! :D
Well, to be honest, this announcement made me think if there isn't something big coming from both of them. Can you imagine if Nintendo partnered with Apple to develop NX and the console is actually able to run the iOS system? With all the talk of detaching controllers on NX, you'd be basically left with... a tablet, right? A tablet that has a secondary OS, why not?
I know it's hard to believe that Apple would let that happen. At the same time, they aren't actually competing, so, who knows?
I personally think that if NX's controller can become a tablet like device, it would be awesome to have it also run iOS or Android. Imagine the games already there from the start and also being able to play it on TV!

I still can't believe that so many objected when some suggested a couple of years ago that Nintendo would begin releasing their main franchises on mobile. Things have really changed in the 8th gen.

The suggestions were about porting existing games and putting sequels on mobile. What Nintendo is actually doing is very different, hence why the calls for Nintendo to go third party haven't stopped at all. |
Actually, the consensus seemed to be that Nintendo wouldn't touch mobile at all since their handhelds were doing so well on their own and Wii U would win the 8th gen since the Wii won the one before and the same manufacturer always wins twice in a row (it was a shockingly common statement in here for some time).
It's jaw-dropping how low Nintendo has fallen that they are selling out to Apple.
I dunno what's funnier at this point.... the fans who are mad about "selling out to Apple" or the ones who think Apple struck a deal with Nintendo to make a "runner" game, iOS exclusive.

I don't think that the consensus a couple of years ago was that the Wii U would win the eighth generation. More importantly though, you should address the content of my post more directly. The suggestions from prior years were not about the Nintendo mobile games we are getting, they were about moving content from Nintendo handhelds and past home consoles to mobile. |
True, to some extent, but how do you know we're talking about the same claims here? We've both been in here a very long time. Judging by your example of thinking the Wii U would win a couple of years ago, I have a feeling you're sort of missing my point. Before the Wii U launched, before it was called Wii U, there seemed to be a widespread belief that the next Nintendo console would win by default, simply because the Wii did. On the hem of the same brand of logic, it was said that Nintendo would never touch the mobile market since their handheld position was untouchable, this was a continued belief way into the 3DS's life, almost up to the point when Nintendo announced their partnership with an actual provider of mobile services.
Simply put; people believed in a handful of set rules and guarantees for Nintendo and their future efforts, these rules have been slain one by one, proving the beliefs themselves to be more or less as irrational as some claimed they were way back when, Nintendo have gone from being an unstoppable force on all fronts of the gaming market and to becoming a company with a somewhat hazy identity, frantically searching for relevant and profitable venues to offer their software. The 8th gen was in the bag due to the 7th gen and they would not touch mobile gaming, period.
Besides; even if we're talking main franchises and moving from home console and handheld; who is to say that this won't happen should the NX turn out to be a dud?
I'm not really dodging your questions any more than you are choosing for me which statements and what era of vgchartz I'm referring to. I'm well aware that there have also been more recent discussions on the matter, revolving around Nintendo going 3rd party. For the record; I have been against that notion, and I still am, for a few reasons.

Nintendo can simply shit all of its eshop games like Pushmo, Mario vs Donkey Kong, Ketzals Corridors, Rusty's Real Deal Baseball, Dillion's Rolling Western, Sakura Samurai, Dr. Mario/Lugi, Mario Picross, etc... onto iOS and Android. You don't think they can make quick cash with any of those ports? Use that money to finance NX games. Seems simple to me.

Nah I think even on mobile people want some kind of approximation of "real" Nintendo experiences. Pokemon Go is still a Pokemon game about finding and collecting Pokemon, which is the core concept of the series. It's just done in a way that utilizes mobile.
Mario on iPhone is still about platforming and jumping and beating Bowser with grass levels, underground levels, Koopa castle levels, goombas, etc. It's just made in a way anyone can play with just one hand, even while having one arm on the subway rail as Mr. Miyamoto said at the Apple event.
People don't want things like Rusty's Real Deal Baseball, as Miitomo showed, just having the Nintendo logo on an app doesn't make it successful.
Treating mobile like a crapping ground for B-rate ideas will result in B-rate profits, Nintendo wants to make big money here. Things like Pokemon Go and Mario Run can do that because they respect and adapt the source material in a way that's even more accessible.

Almost all those eshop games I listed have good reviews. I own several if not all of them and they are all bad ass or worth the purchase. I believe they can easily sell those eshop games onto iOS and Android.
