Actually, the consensus seemed to be that Nintendo wouldn't touch mobile at all since their handhelds were doing so well on their own and Wii U would win the 8th gen since the Wii won the one before and the same manufacturer always wins twice in a row (it was a shockingly common statement in here for some time).

I don't think that the consensus a couple of years ago was that the Wii U would win the eighth generation.

More importantly though, you should address the content of my post more directly. The suggestions from prior years were not about the Nintendo mobile games we are getting, they were about moving content from Nintendo handhelds and past home consoles to mobile.

True, to some extent, but how do you know we're talking about the same claims here? We've both been in here a very long time. Judging by your example of thinking the Wii U would win a couple of years ago, I have a feeling you're sort of missing my point. Before the Wii U launched, before it was called Wii U, there seemed to be a widespread belief that the next Nintendo console would win by default, simply because the Wii did. On the hem of the same brand of logic, it was said that Nintendo would never touch the mobile market since their handheld position was untouchable, this was a continued belief way into the 3DS's life, almost up to the point when Nintendo announced their partnership with an actual provider of mobile services.
Simply put; people believed in a handful of set rules and guarantees for Nintendo and their future efforts, these rules have been slain one by one, proving the beliefs themselves to be more or less as irrational as some claimed they were way back when, Nintendo have gone from being an unstoppable force on all fronts of the gaming market and to becoming a company with a somewhat hazy identity, frantically searching for relevant and profitable venues to offer their software. The 8th gen was in the bag due to the 7th gen and they would not touch mobile gaming, period.

Besides; even if we're talking main franchises and moving from home console and handheld; who is to say that this won't happen should the NX turn out to be a dud?

I'm not really dodging your questions any more than you are choosing for me which statements and what era of vgchartz I'm referring to. I'm well aware that there have also been more recent discussions on the matter, revolving around Nintendo going 3rd party. For the record; I have been against that notion, and I still am, for a few reasons.
