Besides; even if we're talking main franchises and moving from home console and handheld; who is to say that this won't happen should the NX turn out to be a dud?

Nintendo can simply shit all of its eshop games like Pushmo, Mario vs Donkey Kong, Ketzals Corridors, Rusty's Real Deal Baseball, Dillion's Rolling Western, Sakura Samurai, Dr. Mario/Lugi, etc... onto iOS and Android.  You don't think they can make quick cash with any of those ports?   Use that money to finance NX games.  Seems simple to me.

Nah I think even on mobile people want some kind of approximation of "real" Nintendo experiences. Pokemon Go is still a Pokemon game about finding and collecting Pokemon, which is the core concept of the series. It's just done in a way that utilizes mobile.

Mario on iPhone is still about platforming and jumping and beating Bowser with grass levels, underground levels, Koopa castle levels, goombas, etc. It's just made in a way anyone can play with just one hand, even while having one arm on the subway rail as Mr. Miyamoto said at the Apple event.

People don't want things like Rusty's Real Deal Baseball, as Miitomo showed, just having the Nintendo logo on an app doesn't make it successful.

Treating mobile like a crapping ground for B-rate ideas will result in B-rate profits, Nintendo wants to make big money here. Things like Pokemon Go and Mario Run can do that because they respect and adapt the source material in a way that's even more accessible.
