In Belgium/Netherlands around 70% voted for Erdogan.

Wow. I thought they were leaning towards the more liberal side. But perhaps it's the effect of being an immigrant, you tend to become more nationalist and positive to your old country.

Nah that's mostly because they grow up in Europe with the Turkish State telivision that is in the hands of Erdogan, enough media that isn't got shutdown. So people with Turkish roots probably see a strong Turkey but don't see the problems, overall if their are problems Erdogan will blame it on the Kurds/Gülen etc.

For example in the Netherlands you have a new political party that basically exists out of 'New Dutch citizens' or immigrants children including many with Turkish roots who don't mind to hate or criticize Wilders but will not criticize Erdogan.

Pro-Erdogan F-16 fighter jet just shot down Military helicopter apparently

This is going to turn to civil war...

No. It would have turned to a civil war had the coupists won, due to so many Turks being extremely passionate supporters of Erdogan. But now that he so obviously won it will be over in a few hours. The army guys will give in very fast in order to avoid severe punishment. Erdogan has got massive support on the streets.

This year is just something else!

Attack at Brussels airport
Attack at Istanbul airport
Attack at club in Orlando
Attack in Nice
Brexit
Escalating racial tensions in the U.S., with police officers being killed
Now this in Turkey

And a choice between Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton.

World is fucked.

This could be secularisms last stand in Turkey. Erdogan has shat over Ataturks legacy

Oh fuck.
Erdogan was clearly trying to set himself uf for a dictatorship, but a military coup is rarely a good thing. From what I hear the military is divided too, the ones couping are pushing against Erdogans state decree islamisation of the country.

Then this "coup" attempt is a good thing.

We'll have to wait to see how it plays out but at least this is a good sign right?

'The military says they want "to reinstall the constitutional order, democracy, human rights and freedoms, to ensure that the rule of law once again reigns in the country, for the law and order to be reinstated".'

Yeah... the military could very well be the "good" guys.

The immigrant effect is very common all over the West though, and part of it is what you describe, a romanticized picture of the homeland. Often facilitated by state propaganda back home.

I'm sad to hear about the double standards, Geert Wilders versus Erdogan. It's the same here in Sweden, and elsewhere. Every foreign ethnic group is a proud xx national and also receive state funds to preserve their culture, but Swedes are supposed to feel like racists if they even try to bring up the topic of Swedish culture, heritage and identity and our version of Geert Wilders is compared with Hitler. No proportions.

If you're at a pub quiz in 20 years time and the question starts with "in what year" just answer 2016
