It may sounds harsh, but you're maybe delusionnal about the capabilities of the PS4 slim being capable of 4k gaming.

So Digital Foundry is delusional?

If they've told people games will run at 4k then yes, you need Titan level gpus to handle 4k assets and yes that would include genres like fighting games.

I don't understand why people think that the consoles cannot render at 4k. Any game can be played at any resolution so long as the hardware can output it. If you adjust the graphic fidelity, you definitely can get playable games at 4k.

Well yes, while technically true, it might not be feasible. For example if a console can output at 4K, but the game has PS1-level graphical fidelity and runs at 3 frames per second, then it's sort of pointless, isn't it?

Games like Rayman Adventures, Tales of Monkey Island, Infinity Blade 3, Real Racing 3 and many others are way above "PS1-level graphical fidelity" and run perfectly fine even on iPads in native 2048x1536 resolution.

Modern consoles should have no problem to play these games in native 4K.

The problem is that you would need to severely lower or even remove most post-processing effects, and even then the frame rates would be dubious. I don't think people realize how much power is needed for rendering 4k at acceptable frame rates, even with lowered settings overall.

Immense resolution with poor effects is kind self defeating as a visual concept, the lack of effects will become all the more clear with a crisper picture resolution on bigger displays, same goes for frame rates.

Current consoles will never be able to output proper 4k gaming at decent frame rates, and if they were to update devices with the capacity to do so, these would tear through the pricing tiers like a mad elephant and basically be elite boxes with a tiny, niche market.

Trust me, I get it. I am just saying those people claiming it would be impossible, it isn't. With VR and 4k, we will see more and more stylize games (a la Nintendo's games) that look great but do not require as much horsepower as the ultra-realistic shooter/adventure game . Check out PSVR titles like No Man's Sky or Battlezone. Heck, games with Gen 7 fidelity would look good at 4k and in VR and if rumors of NX being more powerful than PS4, I am positive they will have some 4k titles.

The type of gamer/customer who appreciates higher resolutions and likely VR, are not the ones most likely to appreciate those types of games, so that seems counterproductive as a concept to me. Casual gamers and customers care a lot less about tech, resolution, more about price, availability and "it" factor. VR is a long way off from being mainstream with the prices it currently has, these will stay high for some years to come due to (likely) low product volume and sales mostly to enthusiasts.

4k as a gaming concept is not ready for mainstream, regardless of stylized visuals and other technical work-arounds and demographic tailoring. If Nintendo were to aim for simplistic gaming with VR and 4k with the NX, they'll be shoothing themselves in the foot one more time by offering a bipolar gaming concept with no real demographic, just like they did with the Wii U, let's all hope they have more sense than that.

While of course I was embellishing to make a point, those games wouldn't exactly measure up to the standards of say Uncharted 4 and the like. That's what I'm getting at.

But they don't have to focus on just 4k or VR. I am just saying that it seems like people are forgetting that a console can have multiple resolutions and framerates. NX and PS4K better at least be consistently 1080/60p and if they are, then 4k/30p would not be unreasonable to acheive. With Sony pushing VR and 4k, Nintendo needs to tout 4k capabilites or something next-genish to even compete and get a serious look at from gamers.

Do you guys even know how much power is required to run 4K on a AAA game, a few indies 2d might run on 4k on PS4 at 30fps. So unless the NX is going to be 4 or 5 times as strong as the PS4 I would say no freaking way.

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar
