Forums - Sales - Wii - Motion Sensor = ?????

You guys are all missing reality.

Without motion control, Nintendo would have opted for a graphically powerful system. If it'd have released around the same time as the Wii did, I'd expect it to have had graphics slightly more powerful than X360 but less powerful than PS3.

I'd also expect it to have a greater amount of flash memory in it, probably 2GB - still no hard drive. Online would have gotten more attention, but still lacked in comparison to XBL, and third-party support would have continued being extremely mediocre (although, the more hardcore multiplat titles would have actually made their way over).

And it'd have probably still launched at $250, effectively still selling well but not necessarily taking the #1 position. At the same time, though, the 360 and PS3 have seen bolstered sales, to a degree, thanks to the Wii - the videogame industry as a whole has been getting better sales thanks to the attention the Wii has gotten. As a result, neither of them would have quite the sales they have right now, either. Of course, their sales weren't affected anywhere near as much by the Wii's motion control + success, so they wouldn't have suffered as much... But, they WERE still slightly affected.

Since it'd have essentially been selling as a direct competitor to the others this time, and it'd have no special gimmicky concepts, Nintendo would likely have started emulating a lot more of what the competitors have been doing. As a result, online voice-chat would have already been released, a more organized and professional-looking user interface would have evolved, and the market would have not really begun the intense expansion it's facing right now.

I'd expect that the "Gamecube 2" would have probably ended up still taking first this generation, but by a very minor margin - the 360 would have been right on its heels with vastly superior North American sales and somewhat better European sales. In Japan, the GCN2 would've won out over the competition, particularly since the 360 would have still been a commercial failure there.

I'd put this generation's current sales as follows in the above scenario:

Nintendo Gamecube 2 - 13.50m
Sony Playstation 3 - 10.25m
Microsoft Xbox360 - 17.00m

This thread is useless. The whole point of the Wii is the motion sensing. It's like asking, "What would the Xbox 360 be without graphics and online' :p, or "What would DS be without 2 screens and its touchscreen"

Wii - Wiimote = SSBB + MK

:P

Last I heard, the Wii Wheel (which uses the Wiimote) was being praised.

Well, this is the last time I heard of it

Nintendo and MTV film helpful reminder: the Wii Wheel does absolutely nothing

We know, it's easy to get caught in all the magic that is Mario Kart Wii -- "it's like Smash Bros. but with karts and more banana throwing!" -- but let's not fool ourselves here: that Wii Wheel is potentially the least functional piece of plastic Nintendo has shipped since the Virtual Boy. It apparently took the fine folks at MTV two whole videos to figure this out under the patient tutelage of a Nintendo rep, but while the Wii Wheel can potentially serve as a helpful reminder to hold the Wiimote with the buttons facing you, it adds zero functionality to the equation, and it's only therefore "necessary" for the first 30 seconds of play -- after which it can be tossed to your dog or teething child as a chew toy. Some might appreciate the ratio of turning a full wheel instead of a Wiimote, but we all know the truly hardcore are going to be kicking your ass with their Wavebirds anyways, to the point really is moot. Video is after the break.

Soriku (Feb 10/08): In 5 years the PS3/360 will be dead.

Yeah I'm sure using the Wheel or just the remote sideways will be fine for casuals, but regular controllers will undoubted be infinitely better and more accurate.

I'm disappointed about Wiimote but It's only my fault because I expected impossible things with the current tecnology.

Anyway Wii without wiimote would have been the same failure as Gamecube so this question has no sense.

PS3 - tech update = PS2
X360 - tech update = Xbox

Of course an equivalent question would be:  What would be the other consoles without their defining attribute.

PS3 - Blu-ray = Shorter games with very nice graphics

X360 - Online play = Individual FPS with very nice graphics

Wii - wiimote = a very cheap console, probably $149, that is still better than the previous generation.  Just not by that much.

One of the obvious group that would go away would be the non-traditional gaming casuals.  The older adults and the women who are attracted by the ease of playing a video game for fun.  PS3 could have survived without Blu-Ray.  X360 would be hard pressed but perhaps been okay without online (or not).  I can't see Wii doing much better than Gamecube without the motion sensor.

Now strangely enough, Nintendo would have done better profit-wise than X360, because just like the Gamecube made money, so would have the Wii.   Just way way less than now.

Torturing the numbers.  Hear them scream.

yeah no wiimote - updated gamecube = phailure

For those attacking the Wii Wheel, every review so far has praised it as lots of fun and the best part of the game. Even the one 8/10 review praised the Wii Wheel as awesome fun.
