Forums - Movies & TV - Avatar 2 = $3 Billion. Here is Why.

The Long Wait

The Chinese box office will overtake the domestic box office by 2017 or 2018 to become the biggest market in the world

Inflation.

Avatar is the second best selling Blu-Ray movie of all-time with 7,4 million sold.

I don't see it simply because I don't see Avatar as culturally relevant today. Star Wars, Toy Story, and Jurassic Park were films people came back to time and again. Avatar was this event that got everyone's attention, but a year later it faded away. When was the last time you heard someone quote or reference it? Either in day to day or general pop culture? Do you expect long wait lines and midnight showings to break records?

I don't doubt it will do fine, but I struggle to see it match the original's box office gross.

Will anyone even care about this movie when it's finally released? Avatar was such a mediocre and forgettable film (Pocahontas meets Aliens) and its only draw in the first place was its visual effects and eye candy designed to push "3D" in theaters that didn't require those goofy red/blue glasses.

Don't get me wrong, Avatar 2 will still do big bucks at the box office, but now that 3D in theaters is no longer a big deal and blockbuster action / sci fi films are a dime a dozen these days, especially around the holidays, I don't see how Avatar 2 sets any records or even comes close to besting its predecessor.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

Wait, it's not the first??? What sold more than Avatar? I heard Avatar sold like 30+ million worldwide. Bluray and dvd combined.

This is just dumb, sorry. Did Titanic have quotable dialogue??? Some films like Point Break and Pulp Fiction have some of the MOST quotable lines and they weren't huge box office draws at all.

Case in point: Star Wars is just awesome to the FANS! Just because THEY like to quote it doesn't mean anything. Quotable lines do NOT make a huge movie. If AVatar's trailer impresses with stunning visuals and an interesting plotline, it WILL draw in crowds.

Hell, I'm an Avatar fan and I've been waiting for a sequel the moment the first film ended. Here we are 6 years later and I'm still waiting.

3D is not what it was. There are still plenty of screens because theaters have to make back their investment I am sure, but not like it was when avatar released. That was one of the draws. If it is as amazing as the firsts 3D it will still do well though. I am willing to predict around 1.5 billion.

There are still plenty of screens because plenty of people still go see them, and the premium they charge makes it worth it. The kind of return on investment you're proposing doesn't work in a real economy. If the most efficient way to make back the investment (which they already did) would be to ditch 3D showings completely, then that's what they'd do.

Additionally, a 3D projector that flickers between left and right streams is basically just a normal projector with a polarized wheel, and functions like one no problem. That's what most theaters have. Premium 3D theaters that use two projectors, if worse comes to worse, essentially have a backup projector. 3D wouldn't have been as adopted if there weren't failsafes.

Not many movies are still shot with a 3D rig though, you're right about that.

Not a chance. Not even if every showing was at Imax. They'll be lucky to get the billion. The price of 3d tickets and the curiosity surrounding 3d is what got that movie it 2.5b.

2.8 billion, actually. And I disagree with you. Sure, it has a LOT to do with it but if that was the case Avatar wouldn't have sold miraculously on home video.

With all this talk of Avatar, it made me remember this video I saw back when the movie was new XD To this day I can't tell if it's serious or not but it's fucking hilarious

I don't even think the sequel will get 75% of the same crowd it had this time around in theaters. I will for sure still see it but tons of other movies are outputting the visual fidelity that made everyone so excited to see it the first time around.
Just a guess, probably wrong.
