Revenge of the Sith is the best Star Wars movie to me. The other two prequels, especially the first aren't very good though. The first is downright terrible.

Watched all the star wars films in anticipation of the new one. Honestly, the originals were not as good as I remember but there is still an undeniable charm about them. The prequels were not as bad as I remember and the third one is legitimately a great film. I still think the light saber fights are a bit over the top in the prequels. Almost like a dance at times with seemingly unnecessary movements an spinning. I enjoyed them more than the duels in the originals however.
Pretty excited to see where the force awakens will rank.
| Puppyroach said: The third episode is really good and the only one on par with episode four and five imo. The light saber fights though, are on a whole other level in the newer films. The thing with jedis is that their senses are extremely heightened, making the fights of course look more fluid and impressive than a normal sword fight. The problem in the older movies is that they didn't have the resources to make those fight as they should be. They are really disappointing compared to what a Jedi should be capable of. |
Really? When the only Jedi's left in 4-6 are two old characters. A rushed trained Luke. And Vader who is mostly robot, at this point. That isn't the peak of being a Jedi. They wouldn't have done the more fuild stuff, logically. Even Yoda's crazy fight in episode 2. He was only a few years from death in 5. And in hiding. He wouldn't out right fight anyone ever again. So it make sense that in 1-3 they fought like they did. And 4-6, everyone was basically tired and slow.
We've started to watch the movies in preparation for The Force Awakens. So far we've watched episodes I and II, and it's just hit me on how bad the script is. The actors could only do so much with such poor dialogue. Hayden Christensen got a lot of flack for his portrayal of Anakin, but no one could have made the character seem alive with such awkward and stilted dialogue.
Aaaaaanyways!
The lightsaber fight choreography in the prequels are pretty impressive, and I think they get more and more impressive as the movies go on. The Maul fight in 1 was actually less impressive than I remembered, while the Tyranus fight in 2 was more impressive. But Lucas finally hits his stride in III with the Tyranus/Vader fights. They're definitely the best in the series by a long shot in my humble opinion.
I am a giant Christopher Lee fanboy so I might be a tad biased though.
The justification for the prequel's lightsaber fights being over choreographed is the argument that story wise, light saber fights don't make that much sense being so dynamic. At least in the mythos set by the original films.
Action wise it's an amazing spectacle, but at the same time it makes it hard to convey any emotional character through them.
At the same time, that actually makes sense because Jedi's are supposed to keep their emotions at bay, you would expect emotional under trained jedi like Luke to be more sloppy then Anakin or Obiwan.
But there are a lot more problems with the prequels than just the lightsabers. Granted, the issues mainly arise when you consider the films in the canon rather than standalone. And the fact, that Lucas pulled things from the trilogy that made no sense in the prequels, like the padawan training.

I liked the Darth Maul fight but Dooku was lame and Count Greivious was lamer. The Anakin/Obi-Wan was ridiculously over the top too, I expected at some point for them to be one handed fighting while going through the Burger King drive through.
And the Darth Maul fight would have be 100x cooler if oh I don't know ... they actually GAVE SOME FREAKING SCREEN TIME TO DARTH MAUL. Like any normal, sane screenwriter would. But no, he's given like 2 lines in the Phantom Menace, apparently watching Jar-Jar act like a buffoon/idiot/stepping in poop warranted him getting 10x more screen time, lets just ignore the antagonist of the film that's supposed to drive tension/drama in the film.
Watch in the new Star Wars, I gauruntee you Kylo Ren will kill someone in his first or second big scene or do something that really shows why he's bad. This is called "establishing a character" (aka: good storytelling ... showing not telling). I
f two people bashing light sticks together is the best thing your movie has going for it ... odds are it's not a very good movie.
I dare you, no I double dare you to sit and watch the prequels and skip the lightsaber stuff. Its unwatchable crap.
They're pretty much ridiculous at least in Episode I

I'm looking forward for Episode VII on midnight December 16.

I think it makes alot of sense, the padawan training? how doesnt that make sense? also i dont see the dialogues bad, or even the acting, or the story. they are all fine to me. Yes even the famous. I dont like sand, and that. I DONT MIND IT! WHen i watch it, i seriously dont see how people react so bad over it. Its just a dialogue. That people can say. Its possible. Acting wasnt bad at all, Hayden christensen did a great job to perform anakin, as a fuel hatred jedi, who becomes a sith and just unleashes his fears and anger he had inside him, if you are as powerful as him, you would want this. Then as he became darth vader he became much more mature in a way, and became even more bad-ass, thats called AGING. And there were way more emotions imo in the anakin vs obiwan fight than any other. The emotions in both were giving me goosebumps. With the epic music in the background. Also the prequels gave us cool planets. Awsome things. I know alot of greenscreen, but it looked cool. The kamino planet felt real, the only time i noticed there was a green screen kinda was at the jedi temple in episode 3. Utapau, the new weapons, factions etc are awsome.

Based on what you're shown in the movies describe Padme's personality. This is the lead female character for the entire franchise and she has the personality of a cardboard box. And there's nothing Natalie Portman can do with that because she's given nothing on the page to work with. The most logical reason that she falls for Anakin probably is that she hits her head pretty damn hard when she falls off that transport (dude admits to mass murder and loving facism, but she just shrugs it off).
Every movie these days has CGI with 50 different planets, so what? What's so notable or impressive about that? Guardians of the Galaxy has different alien planets. So does that Wachowski turd that came out a few months ago with Channing Tatum (incredible special effects actually probably better than any of the Star Wars prequels ... it's a HORRIBLE movie).
There is bad CGI in Episode II and III too IMO, some of it looks rushed, the exterior shots of Kamino look like a PS2 cinematic these days
Fugly.
The Anakin transition is handled incredibly poorly ... basically this is what happens, he wakes up and as of 7 AM that day is a relatively "good person". Fast forward 6-7 hours and he makes the jump from that to murdering little children. Like ... lol ... it's not even remotely plausible but we kinda just go with it because by that point it's just "become Darth Vader already you whiny prick".
For me the prequels are essentially unwatchable, but I can't take anything away from anyone who enjoys those movies. Taste is subjective.
